Field Hockey Rallies Past Rider, 3-2 (OT)

McGrory’s second collegiate goal 3:36 into OT lifts Skyhawks to first NEC win

EASTON, Mass. (October 4, 2024) – Freshman Emma McGrory scored 3:36 into overtime to lift Stonehill College to a 3-2 triumph over Rider University in a Northeast Conference field hockey matchup on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

McGrory's second collegiate goal capped a Stonehill comeback from a pair of second half deficits as the Skyhawks forced overtime with sophomore Karleigh Mirabile's first goal of the season with 7:53 to play in regulation.

Highlights
  • McGrory and Mirabile were joined among Stonehill goal-scorers by junior Makayla Strickulis.
  • Freshman Tia-May Harlos dished out a pair of assists, including McGrory's game winner.
  • Senior Shannon Conte made six of her seven saves in the fourth quarter as the teams combined for three goals and 14 shots.
  • Freshman Jade Regnart also registered seven saves in the Rider cage, including five in the fourth quarter.
  • Junior Semra Said and freshman Olivia Machiavelli scored goals for the Broncs.

How It Happened
  • Said scored her first goal of the season on Rider's first shot on goal of the contest, knocking in a cross from freshman Pauli Thiele with 3:25 left in the opening quarter.
  • After having a goal disallowed shortly after the Rider opener, Stonehill was not able to level the score until 9:13 into the second half as Strickulis took a corner insertion from Harlos and drove a low show into the left side of the cage for her second goal of the year.
  • After the teams combined for seven shots over the first three quarters, Machiavelli pushed Rider back in front with her seventh goal of the season 1:37 into a fourth quarter where the teams would combine for three goals, 14 shots and seven corners.
  • Stonehill pulled even for a second time with Mirabile's third career goal with 7:53 to play in regulation when she knocked in a cross from the left side by freshman Siena De Roeck on the near post.
  • In the extra frame, Harlos feathered a beautiful through ball down the right side of the field that released McGrory on a breakaway where she deposited her second goal of the year under the charging Regnart to lift Stonehill to the win.

Noteworthy
  • This afternoon marked Stonehill's first official home game of the season, with the Skyhawks having also posted a 4-2 victory over Central Michigan University in a neutral site game they hosted at Harvard University exactly a month ago.
  • Conte moved into fourth place on Stonehill's career saves list with her seven stops today giving her 344 saves in 44 career games. She passed Elizabeth Genovese, '15, who made 342 career saves, on the program's all-time list.
  • Stonehill posted its first win over Rider in three meetings, avenging an 8-0 loss in the first meeting between the two in the only prior encounter at W.B. Mason Stadium two years ago. The Broncs had outscored the Skyhawks 10-0 over the first two meetings.
  • Stonehill snapped a seven-game skein with the win today, with the three goals halting a seven-game run in which the Skyhawks scored one goal.
