SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 5, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's ice hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to Syracuse in its weekend finale Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 0-3 overall, while the Orange improved to 2-0 on the young campaign.
Highlights
- Junior defender Lily Barrett registered a team-high seven shot attempts on the day with one being on goal for the Skyhawks. Barrett also blocked a game-high four shots on the defensive end of the ice for Stonehill.
- Graduate transfer Maeve Connolly tallied a team-high four shots on goal throughout the non-conference matchup.
- First-year netminder Alexsa Caron registered 33 saves in between the pipes for the Skyhawks. Caron now ranks top ten in the NCAA with 108 total saves through three games this season.
- First-year forward Rylee McLeod recorded her first career multi-point game scoring a goal and dishing out an assist for Syracuse.
- Sophomore Jocelyn Fiala netted her first collegiate goal, while junior Charlotte Hallett and graduate student Charli Kettyle netted their first goals of the season.
- Sophomore Bella Gould posted her first career shutout in her first collegiate appearance, stopping all 20 shots she faced inside the crease for the Orange.
How it Happened
Syracuse opened the game out strong, outshooting Stonehill 15-3 over the first 13 minutes of action. At the 13:26 mark of the opening frame, the Orange would light the lamp and open the scoring as Fiala netted her first collegiate goal off assists from junior
Heidi Knoll and sophomore
Jackson Kinsler.
Stonehill would come out of the gates peppering Syracuse with five shot attempts in the first 90 seconds of the second period. However, the orange defense and Gould would halt the Skyhawks scoring chances off the sticks of Connolly, Achtyl as well as the sophomore duo of
Pusle Dyring-Andersen and
Makenna Slocum.
Despite the early chances in the second, the Orange would double their advantage at the 8:11 mark of the second when Kettyle would net her first of the season and eighth off McLeod's first career assist.
Syracuse wasted little time in the third and final frame of regulation, increasing their lead. At the 2:57 and 3:44 marks of the third, Hallett and McLeod would each score their first goals of the season, with McLeod's being the first of her collegiate career.
Following the Orange's fourth goal of the contest, Stonehill went on the attack, tallying 25 shot attempts over the remaining 16 minutes of regulation. However, the Syracuse defense and Gould in net kept the Skyhawks off the board and secured a 4-0 shutout victory.
