How It Happened
Just over five minutes into the opening frame, Merrimack nearly jumped out to the first lead of the game when, on a three-on-one break into its offensive zone, freshman
Vann Yuhas glanced a shot off the crossbar. However, less than 15 seconds after the Warriors' early scoring opportunity, the Skyhawks would respond and take a one-goal lead at the 6:04 mark of the period.
After Ireland forced a Merrimack turnover on their defensive blue line, the junior captain would capitalize and rifle a shot into the back of the cage off an assist from Aben below the Warrior's goal line. Three minutes later, at the 8:51 mark of the opening 20 minutes of action, Orr would net his third goal of the season and give the Skyhawks a two-goal lead on the power-play after receiving a pass through the crease from Galante and Nicolas.
Coming out of the break, Stonehill wasted little time extending its lead to three when Campione sent an up-ice pass off the boards to Galante, who whistled a shot past Wallström for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Despite jumping out to a three-goal lead early in the second period, the Warriors would cut their deficit to one midway through the second after a pair of goals from Fitzpatrick and Venuto at the 7:55 and 8:32 marks of the frame, respectively.
Merrimack would send the game into the second intermission knotted at three aside after Young sent a rebounded shot past Androlewicz and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season and of his career at the 14:06 mark of the middle frame.
The third and final frame of regulation would be a back-and-forth battle over the opening minutes of play until 5:41, where Schreifels
rocketed
a point-blank shot off the post, nearly regaining the Skyhawk's advantage on the scoreboard. Despite the early opportunities, Androlewicz and the Stonehill defense would hang on to force overtime after being outshot 18-4 over the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Although Stonehill started the extra frame on the power play, the Skyhawks would come up empty on that skater advantage but would net the game-winner as play continued four-on-four without a stoppage. At the 3:11 mark, Campione would send a cross-ice pass over to Orr, who one-timed a slapshot into the back of the cage for his second goal of the night, sealing Stonehill's 4-3 overtime victory.
