Men’s Basketball Defeats New Orleans, Completing Largest Win Versus a Division I Opponent

Largest score differential for Stonehill over D1 opponent as Skyhawks shoot over 50% from the field

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (November 15, 2024) The Stonehill College men's basketball team defeated New Orleans, 80-54, in its largest win over a Division I opponent in program history Friday night at the UMPC Events Center in the Skyhawks second game of the Urban-Bennett Invitational powered by P3R.

LEADERS
  • Graduate student Josh Morgan (Brampton, Ontario) scored a game-high 20 points while recording his first career double-double, corralling a career-high ten rebounds.
  • Morgan went 6-11 from the field and 4-8 from three as he scored 20+ points on four or more threes for the second time this season.
  • Junior Chas Stinson (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Hermann Koffi (Quebec City, Quebec) split the point guard duties, each recording five assists, while Stinson had a season-high 15 points and five rebounds. Koffi also had nine points and a career-high eight rebounds.
  • Sophomore Todd Brogna (Southborough, Mass.) tallied 12 points and seven rebounds, going 4-7 from the field to shoot over 50% from the field for the fourth time out of five games this season.
  • New Orleans was led by Theo Grant who scored 15 points in just 16 minutes off the bench, knocking down five of his nine shot attempts. James White scored 10 points and led the Privateers on the glass, grabbing eight rebounds.
FIRST HALF
  • After missing its first two shots of the game, Stonehill got red hot, making four of its next five shots, including two three-pointers, to take a 12-3 lead early on.
  • The Privateers scored the next three points to cut their deficit to six, but that would be the closest New Orleans would get to Stonehill for the remainder of the game.
  • The Skyhawks went on a 10-0 run fueled by four different scorers as the lead jumped up to 16 points, 22-6, with 12 minutes remaining in the half.
  • Stonehill closed out the half going 7-12 from the field and 5-9 from deep while holding New Orleans to a 21.9% (7-32) over the first 20 minutes of action as the Skyhawks went into the break leading by 26, 45-19.
SECOND HALF
  • The Skyhawks continued to shoot the ball well to open the second half, making six of their first 12 shots as they built their largest lead of the game, a 34-point, 61-27 advantage with 12:10 left in the game.
  • New Orleans tried chipping away at the Stonehill lead but Stonehill cruised to the finish line, winning the non-conference, neutral-site matchup, 80-54.
  • Stonehill went 11-22 in the second half while the Privateers shot just 28.6% (12-42) from the field as the Skyhawks defense remained stout for the entire 40 minutes.
NOTEWORTHY
  • This was a first-ever matchup between Stonehill and New Orleans while being the second game against a Southland Conference opponent for the Skyhawks, improving to 1-1 all-time against the SLC.
  • This was the first neutral site contest for the Skyhawks since a pair of games at Fordham, where Stonehill defeated Holy Cross on November 19, 2022, before falling to the University of Illinois-Chicago on November 21, 2022.
  • Stonehill had its largest win against a Division I opponent in program history with the previous mark being a 15-point win (75-60) over Long Island University on Feb. 16, 2023.
  • Overall, this was Stonehill's largest margin of victory since a 27-point victory over Division III Hartford University last season, 71-44.
  • Morgan scored 20+ points on 4+ threes for the second time this season, while notching his first career double-double. The Skyhawks are now 2-0 when Morgan leads the team in scoring.
  • Brogna has now had three games this season of at least 12 points and seven rebounds on 50% shooting from the field.,
  • The Skyhawks' 51.0% (25-49) shooting clip from the field is their highest mark of the season and their best clip since shooting 51.0% in a 71-61 win over Wagner on Feb. 3 last season.
  • Stonehill only reached 80 points in a game once last season, falling to Southland Conference member East Texas A&M (formerly Texas A&M Commerce), 97-86.
  • The Skyhawks led for 38:24 out of 40:00 as the game had zero lead changes and zero ties as Stonehill went wire-to-wire.
  • The Skyhawks held the Privateers to a 25.7% (19-74) shooting night, Stonehill's best defensive game since holding UMass Lowell to a 25.5% (13-51) shooting clip on Feb. 8, 2012.
  • Stonehill's 47 rebounds tonight are the most against a Division I opponent since Feb. 18, 2023, when the Skyhawks grabbed 47 in a triple-overtime loss to Central Connecticut.

  • Stonehill will conclude its trip to Moon Township, Pa. on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. when the Skyhawks take on Lindenwood in the finale of the Urban-Bennett Invitational Hosted by P3R at the UMPC Events Center.
