Women's Hockey Shut Down in Road Loss to Post

SHELTON, Conn. (November 15, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's hockey team was blanked, 1-0, on the road at Post University Friday afternoon in Shelton, Connecticut. With the loss, the Skyhawks dropped to 4-10 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the Eagles improved to 3-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 against conference opponents.

Highlights
  • Junior Gracie Sacca registered a team-high five shots on goal, while classmate Kathryn Karo and sophomore Peyton Wise each tallied four of their own.
  • Graduate student Maeve Connolly was tied for the game-high with three blocked shots on the afternoon.
  • Karo continued her strong season at the faceoff dot, winning 13 of her 20 total draws on the day to improve her season total to 166 total wins on the season.
  • First-year netminder Alexsa Caron posted 20 saves on 21 shots faced in between the pipes for the Skyhawks.
  • Senior Julia Wysocki scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Eagles, marking her fourth goal of the campaign.
  • Junior Tristan Currie dished out her third assist of the year on Wysocki's goal in the third period.
  • Junior goaltender Hannah Saunders picked up her second shutout of the season in a 34-save performance inside the crease for Post.
How it Happened
Stonehill and Post traded early power-play opportunities and played to a scoreless game at the end of the first 20 minutes of action. Despite outshooting the Eagles 18-5 in the first period, a team-high four came off the stick of Sacca and Saunders, and the Post defense would stifle the Skyhawks, holding them off the board in the opening frame.

After a back-and-forth start to the second, Post would go on the attack, peppering Caron and the Stonehill defense with 15 shot attempts from the 7:22 to 14:20 marks of the middle frame. In the second period's final minute, the two sides would trade a pair of excellent scoring chances. After a defensive zone turnover by the Skyhawks, Caron would come up with a point-blank save off junior Tymmarie Grom's bid for the back of the net.

Moments later, first-year defender Reagan Whynot would send a shot in on net off the blue line redirected to the stick of junior Maddison Achtyl out in front of the Eagles net. However, Saunders would hold Achtyl and the Skyhawks off the board again in the second to take a scoreless conference contest into the third and final frame of regulation.

Midway through the third, Wysocki would get the Eagles on the board with 8:38 remaining in the final frame of regulation. After whistling a one-timer high over the Stonehill net, the senior forward would capitalize on a rebound in front and light the lamp on her fourth goal of the season, giving Post the first lead of the game at 1-0.

With just over five minutes remaining in the third, Whynot would rifle a shot off the Post, narrowly leveling the game at one aside. Despite emptying the net with 90 seconds left to play in regulation and owning offensive zone possession, the Skyhawks would be unable to score the equalizer as Post walked away victorious by a narrow 1-0 margin.
