Men's Hockey Late Push Comes Up Short in 4-2 Loss to LIU

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 16, 2024) – The Stonehill College men's hockey team's comeback effort fell short to Long Island University, 4-2, Saturday night inside the Bridgewater Ice Arena. With the loss, the Skyhawks dropped to 4-9 overall, while the Sharks improved to 4-4-1 on the season.

Highlights
  • Sophomore Anthony Galante netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season and improved his point-scoring streak to four straight games.
  • Senior Henri Schreifels led the way for the Skyhawks with two points on the night, lighting the lamp for his third goal of the year and dishing out an assist on Galante's second period power-play goal.
  • Sophomore Brady Hunter registered his fourth assist of the season.
  • First-year classmates Joel Lehtinen and Zach Aben paved the way at the dot for the Skyhawks, each tallying seven faceoff wins on the night.
  • Graduate netminder Connor Androlewicz posted 28 saves in between the pipes for Stonehill.
  • First-year forward Onni Leppänen recorded his first collegiate two-goal game, while junior Riley Wallack and senior Isaiah Fox posted multi-point games for the Sharks.
  • First-year student Luca Leighton lit the lamp on the first goal of his collegiate career.
  • Sophomore goaltender Noah Rupprecht picked up his third win of the season after posting 17 saves inside the crease for LIU.
How It Happened
Stonehill came out of the gates strong, outshooting LIU 8-3 over the first seven minutes of action in the opening frame. After being outshot at the early stages of the contest, the Sharks would go on the attack, peppering Androlewicz and the Skyhawk's defense with eight shot attempts until the 15:25 mark of the period, where Leppänen would light the lamp on his first of two goals on the night.

Just over three minutes after LIU took the first lead of the game, Leighton would double the Sharks advantage on the scoreboard with the first goal of his collegiate career off an assist from Fox and first-year forward JR Perdion.

Stonehill would waste little time cutting into its deficit after the first intermission. Just 56 seconds into the second period, Galante would net his team-leading seventh goal of the season after capitalizing on a rebounded shot from Schreifels on the power play. After Galante cut the Skyhawks deficit in half, LIU would regain its first-period momentum, netting a pair of goals at the 8:35 mark and 16:23 marks of the middle frame, respectively. Wallack goal just midway through the second eventually proved to be the game-winning tally, while Leppänen capped off his first career two-goal game, sending the matchup into the second intermission with the Sharks leading 4-1.

After a back-and-forth start to the final frame of regulation, Schreifels would bring the score within two at the 10:06 mark when a shot from the far side faceoff dot snuck its way through the pads of Rupprecht in goal. Despite cutting the gap to two midway through the third period, the LIU lead proved too much for the Skyhawks to overcome, as the Sharks would walk away victorious by a final score of 4-2.
