Women's Hockey Skates to Decisive 5-1 Win Over Saint Michael's

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (November 1, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's hockey team skated to a decisive, 5-1, victory over Saint Michael's College Friday night. With the win, the Skyhawk improved to 2-8 overall and 2-3 in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play, while the Purple Knights fell to 1-8 overall and 1-4 against conference opponents.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Peyton Wise lit the lamp on her first goal of the season and fifth of her collegiate career.
  • First-year defender Reagan Whynot and graduate student Maeve Connolly each dished out two assists on the night for the Skyhawks.
  • Connolly and junior Kathryn Karo paved the way at the dot for Stonehill, winning 28 of their combined 43 draws.
  • First-year netminder Alexsa Caron picked up her second career win after stopping 26 of her 27 shots faced on the night.
  • First-year defender Julia Chedel scored the lone goal for the Purple Knights, marking the second of her collegiate career.
  • Junior goaltender Annika Lavender posted 44 saves in between the pipes for Saint Michael's.
How it Happened
Stonehill wasted little time jumping out to an early advantage on the scoreboard. Less than a minute into the conference matchup, Achtyl would find the back of the net for her third goal of the season after capitalizing on a rebound off a shot from the blue line by Whynot.

The Skyhawks would double their lead midway through the opening frame when Feeney received a pass in the high slot from Connolly and rifled a shot over the shoulder of Lavender inside the crease for her first of two goals on the day.

Heading into the second 20 minutes of action, Stonehill would look to continue to apply offensive zone pressure. However, coming out of the break, Saint Michael's College would control possession, outshooting the Skyhawks 14-6 over the first 10 minutes of play in the second period. Despite being outshot early in the frame, Stonehill would regain momentum when Feeney lit the lamp on her second goal of the night on the power play at the 13:39 mark of the period.

Coming out of the second intermission, both sides would go back and forth up and down the ice, trading shot attempts over the first half of the third and final frame of regulation until the 10:04 mark of the period, where Stonehill would find the back of the net for its fourth goal of the contest. Whynot sent a perfect up-ice pass to Sacca on the break, who skated past her defender and shot through Lavender's pads for her second goal of the season.

Wise capped off the Skyhawks scoring at the 17:14 mark on the power play after sending a cross-ice feed from sophomore classmate Pusle Dyring-Andersen into the back of the cage for her first lamp lighter of the campaign.

Despite finding the back of the net at the 18:04 mark of the third off the stick of Chedel, the Stonehill lead grew too much for the Purple Knights to overcome, as the Skyhawks walked away victorious by a final score of 5-1.
