Women's Hockey Downed by Princeton

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 30, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's hockey team dropped its weekend series finale, 12-1, to Princeton University Saturday afternoon inside the Bridgewater Ice Arena. With the decision, the Skyhawks fell to 5-13-1 overall, while the Tigers improved to 8-5 on the year.

Highlights
  • Junior defender Lily Barrett scored her second goal of the season, marking a single-season career-high goal total.
  • Junior Lucie Turcotte registered her second assist of the year on Barrett's lamp-lighter in the first period.
  • Junior co-captain Sydney Russell blocked a game-high four shots, while Turcotte recorded a career-high three blocked shots for Stonehill.
  • Junior Lily Geist tallied a team-high three shots on goal throughout the non-conference contest.
  • First-year netminder Alexsa Caron posted an even 40 saves on the afternoon, marking her fifth game of the season making at least 40 saves.
  • Junior Issy Wunder paved the way for Princeton's scoring output, netting a career-high five goals on the day.
  • Junior Emerson O'Leary fueled the Tigers offensive pressure, recording six points off a goal and five assists.
  • First-year student Mackenzie Alexander and junior Sarah Paul each added three-point outings of their own for Princeton.
  • Junior goaltender Taylor Hyland picked up her third win of the season in between the pipes for the Tigers after stopping 16 of her 17 shots faced on the afternoon.
How it Happened
Stonehill wasted no time applying offensive pressure in the first period, and just over two minutes into the opening frame, the Skyhawks scored their first goal of the weekend against Princeton. After an initial shot by Barrett was blocked by sophomore Maggie Johnson in front, the junior defender quickly retrieved the rebound and fired a shot over Hyland's shoulder into the back of the net.

However, less than 30 seconds later, Princeton responded. Wunder, receiving a pass from Alexander below the goal line, buried a rebound attempt past Caron to tie the game 1-1.

With the two sides trading goals early, Stonehill and Princeton would play to an even 1-1 draw until the 12:52 mark of the opening frame. First-year defender Rosie Klein scored what would prove to be the eventual game-winner, redirecting a shot from the point by Alexander into the net.

Trailing by one after the first period, Stonehill came out strong in the second, looking to regain offensive momentum. The Skyhawks registered three shot attempts early, two of which were on goal. However, Princeton doubled its advantage at the 4:40 mark when Paul scored her first of two goals in the period.

The Tigers kept up the pressure, firing 17 shots on goal in the second period alone, and adding two more goals — one from Paul and another from Wunder — extending their lead to 5-1 heading into the third and final frame of regulation.

Princeton carried its momentum into the third period, scoring seven more unanswered goals while shutting out the Skyhawks to secure a decisive 12-1 victory.
