Women's Basketball Cruises Past Emmanuel, 79-36

Skyhawks bury 11 three-pointers with three double-figure scorers in home opener

EASTON, Mass. (November 7, 2024) – Stonehill College connected on 11 three-pointers and placed three in double-figures in collecting a 79-46 victory over Emmanuel College in a non-conference women's basketball matchup on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

Senior Sharn Hayward led Stonehill's balanced scoring and three double-figure scorers with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 3-for-7 from three-point range, with two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Sophomore Brooke Paquette scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, adding a career-best eight assists and a career-high matching four steals with two rebounds, while junior Chelsea Graiver hit 3-of-4 three-pointers for a career-best 11 points and three rebounds in 20-minutes off the bench.

Senior Maureen Stapleton pulled down a team and season-high nine rebounds, while freshman Shira Elkis chipped in season-highs of eight points and three boards. The Skyhawks connected on 11-of-26 (42.3-percent) three-pointers and converted 20-of-26 free-throws (76.9%) on the night, posting a 52-26 rebounding advantage, outscoring the visitors 22-2 in second-chance points and 24-7 in points off turnovers.

Senior Paris Atuahene led Emmanuel with seven points, three rebounds and two steals. Freshman Tyra Blye added six points three rebounds, three steals, and two assists, while sophomore Kaitlyn Bartash grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and blocked six shots with four points, and two steals.

Stonehill never trailed, using a 13-0 run to break a seven-all tie with 4:21 remaining in the first quarter to carry an 11-point lead (20-9) into the second. Graiver sparked the run with back-to-back three-pointers, while Hayward capped it with a triple with 1:17 to play in the first.

Emmanuel scored the final basket of the opening frame and then the first four of the second to trim its deficit to seven (20-13) 2:12 into the second. Stonehill followed that with a 17-4 run over the next six minutes, led by eight points from Paquette, including a pair of three-pointers, to open a 20-point lead (37-17) after a Paquette three with 1:23 to play before halftime.

Stonehill's lead would not dip inside 20 points the rest of the way, outscoring Emmanuel 20-5 in the third quarter to open a 35-point margin heading to the fourth where the Skyhawks advantage would grow to as much as 45 before settling on the final 43-point win.
 
Noteworthy
  • Stonehill and Emmanuel, two programs that have accumulated over 900 wins in their history, were meeting for the sixth time all-time – but the first since early in the 1980-81 season.
  • Paquette has scored in double-figures in each of Stonehill's first two games of the season, giving her nine career double-figure scoring games.
  • Hayward's first double-figure game of the year is the 12th of her career.
  • Graiver's career-high 11 points is her first career double-figure scoring game, having totaled 28 points in 11 career games played before tonight, including nine points in three games the last two years.

Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NEC) is off until next Wednesday, November 13, when it visits Utah Tech for a non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. (ET) The Skyhawks return home on Tuesday, November 26, to host the University of Maine, reigning champions in the America East Conference, at 7 p.m. Emmanuel has one more exhibition game on tap at Boston University on Tuesday at 6 p.m., before opening its season by hosting the EC Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, November 16-17, starting with a matchup with Hunter College on November 16, at 3 p.m.
