Women's Hockey Secures Comeback Victory Over Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 8, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's hockey team secured a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over New England Women's Hockey Alliance opponent Franklin Pierce University Friday night inside the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Massachusetts. With the win, the Skyhawks improved to 4-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Ravens fell to 5-4 overall and 5-2 against conference opponents.

Highlights
  • Sophomore Pusle Dyring-Andersen lit the lamp on her first goal of the season, while junior Lily Geist found the back of the net for her third of the year.
  • Sophomore Peyton Wise, junior Kathryn Karo, and senior Josie Mendeszoon each registered an assist for the Skyhawks.
  • Karo also continued her outstanding season at the faceoff dot, winning 18 of her 20 total faceoffs on the night.
  • First-year netminder Alexsa Caron posted her fourth career win and third consecutive game only allowing one goal after making 25 saves in between the pipes for Stonehill.
  • Junior Maggie Korneta tallied her third goal of the season off an assist from senior Julia Stevens.
  • Senior goaltender Gwen Bowler recorded a season-high 37 saves inside the crease for Franklin Pierce.
How it Happened
Stonehill opened the conference matchup strong, peppering the Franklin Pierce netminder with seven shots on goal over the opening eight minutes of play in the first. However, with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening frame, Korneta would whistle a shot over the shoulder of Caron while on the power play to get the Ravens on the board.

In the waning seconds of the first 20 minutes of action, Mendeszoon would glance a shot off the crossbar, narrowly leveling the contest at one aside heading into the first intermission.

Coming out into the second period of play, Stonehill looked to knot the game up at one early. Less than two minutes into the middle frame, junior defender Lily Barrett would send a back-handed shot just wide of the Raven's net. Despite outshooting Franklin Pierce 14-6 through the middle period, the Skyhawks were unable to find the equalizer in the second as they would head into the third period trailing Franklin Pierce by one.

At the 3:30 mark of the third and final frame of regulation, the Skyhawks would be held off the board once again when Bowler made a sprawling save on a point-blank shot by Karo from just outside the crease. With under 15 minutes left to play in regulation, Stonehill would head on a five-on-three skater advantage and look to tie the game up at one.

As the final penalty expired for the Ravens, Dyring-Andersen would send a puck off the point into the back of the cage for her first lamp lighter of the campaign, tying the game up at one midway through the third period.

With one minute left and the game knotted at one, a loose puck in front of the Franklin Pierce net would be pounced on by Geist and sent into the back of the cage, giving the Skyhawks their first lead of the game and capping off the comeback victory over the Ravens.
