EASTON, Mass. (December 1, 2024) – Four Skyhawks scored in double-figures to fuel an 88-74 win for the Stonehill men's basketball team at Merkert Gymnasium Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest against MAAC preseason favorite, Quinnipiac.
Stonehill's 4-0 start at Merkert Gymnasium this season is its best start at home since 2019 when the Skyhawks rattled off six straight home wins to start the season.
LEADERS
- Graduate student Josh Morgan (Brampton, Ontario) led all scorers with 22 points on 7-15 shooting from the field and 5-8 shooting from long range.
- Sophomore Louie Semona (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a career-high 18 points, going 6-9 from the field and 3-4 from deep off the bench for the Skyhawks.
- Junior Chas Stinson (Charlotte, N.C.) led Stonehill on the defensive end, grabbing a season-high nine rebounds while matching his season-high of three steals for the second consecutive game. Stinson also tacked on 10 points, making five of his ten shot attempts.
- Freshman Hermann Koffi (Quebec City, Quebec) scored 13 points to go with a team-high four assists while graduate student Amir Nesbitt (Newport News, Va.) also had four assists.
- Quinnipiac also had four double-digit scorers with Paul Otieno and Khaden Bennett each scoring 17 points to lead the Bobcats. Otieno also had 10 rebounds.
FIRST HALF
- Quinnipiac won the tip and scored on its opening possession, holding a lead until back-to-back threes from Morgan gave Stonehill an 8-7 advantage.
- Stonehill missed its next three shots while the Bobcats went 4-6 from the field over an 8-0 run that made the score 15-8 in favor of QU five minutes into the game.
- The Skyhawks trailed 21-15, but back-to-back threes from Morgan and junior Todd Brogna (Southborough, Mass.) tied the score, followed by a fastbreak dunk from Semona that gave Stonehill a 23-21 lead.
- Stonehill took its largest lead of the game, 39-34, thanks to seven more points from Semona as the sophomore scored 12 points off the bench in the first half.
- The Skyhawks led the Bobcats, 42-40, going into the break as both teams shot the ball well for the first 20 minutes. Stonehill finished 15-32 (46.9%) from the field and 8-14 (57.1%) from deep while Quinnipiac made 16-31 (51.6%).
SECOND HALF
- Stonehill made three straight layups to start the second half as the Skyhawks went up 48-40 and would lead for the remainder of the game.
- QU responded with six straight points to pull within two, 48-46, but the Skyhawks made seven of their next eight shot attempts, fueling a 17-5 run that put Stonehill ahead 65-51 with 12 minutes to play.
- The Skyhawks maintained its 14-point lead the rest of the way, closing out the game with a 14-point win, 88-74.
NOTEWORTHY
- Stonehill is now 24-20 all-time while improving to 1-2 against Quinnipiac at the Division I level after losing non-conference games the past two seasons to the Bobcats.
- Stonehill improves to 5-1 this season when Morgan leads the Skyhawks in the scoring column. The grad student currently ranks third in the Northeast Conference, averaging 16.1 points per game. His 28-made threes and 43.1% from long-range lead the conference this season.
- Stonehill is 4-1 when it starts the lineup of Koffi, Morgan, Stinson, Brogna, and junior Ethan Meuser (Shavertown, Pa.).
- Senior Christopher Melis (Chappaqua, N.Y.) scored a season-high nine points on 4-5 shooting with three rebounds and three assists in just 17 minutes off the bench.
- Stonehill had its best shooting performance from the field (33-62; 53.2%) and long-range (13-24; 54.2%) this afternoon. The Skyhawks' 53.2% shooting clip from deep is the highest mark since Stonehill made 56.3% (9-16) in a win against Southern Conn. State on March 1, 2020.
- The Skyhawks combined for 21 assists tonight, the sixth time this season they've tallied at least 15. Stonehill is 4-2 in such games, as the Skyhawks have recorded 20+ in back-to-back games after having 22 assists on Wednesday at Marquette.
