Men's Hockey Falls to LIU in Weekend Finale

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (December 14, 2024) – The Stonehill College men's hockey team fell to the NCAA Division I independent opponent Long Island University, 6-1, Saturday night at the Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, New York. With the loss, the Skyhawks dropped to 6-16 overall, while the Sharks improved to 9-6-1 on the year.

Highlights
  • Sophomore Anthony Galante deflected his team-leading 10th goal of the season into the back of the Sharks net in the third period.
  • Sophomore Charlie Banquier and senior Jake Cady registered assists on Galante's goal.
  • Junior Ryan Davies blocked a team-high two shots on the night for the Skyhawks.
  • Graduate student Connor Androlewicz and freshman Linards Lipskis split time in net for Stonehill, registering 21 total saves on the night.
  • Graduate Nicholas Trela paved the way for the Sharks offensive output, registering three points on the night off a goal and two assists.
  • Freshman Anthony Lucarelli, junior Austin Brimmer, and graduate Andrius Kulbis-Marino posted multi-point outings of their own for LIU.
  • Junior Tyriq Outen earned his fifth win of the season in between the pipes after stopping 16 of his 17 shots faced.
How It Happened
LIU wasted little time applying offensive pressure, with junior Josh Zary scoring just 22 seconds into the game to give the Sharks an early 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, senior Isaiah Fox doubled the advantage, netting what would become the game-winning goal at the 4:47 mark of the first period.

The Sharks continued to dominate throughout the opening frame, adding two more goals in the final 15 minutes to take a commanding 4-0 lead into the first intermission. Trela scored unassisted at the 12:05 mark, followed by Kulbis-Marino, who tallied his second goal of the season less than two minutes later.

LIU carried its offensive momentum into the second period, registering 13 shots on goal in the first eight minutes. Just over nine minutes into the frame, Lucarelli found the back of the net with his second goal of the weekend, extending the Sharks' lead to 5-0 midway through the contest.

Despite earning two power-play opportunities and registering eight shots on goal in the final 10 minutes of the period, the Skyhawks couldn't cut into the deficit as the two sides headed into the third period with LIU leading 5-0.

Just 90 seconds into the final frame, Galante deflected a shot from Banquier past Outen for his 10th goal of the season, getting the Skyhawks on the board. However, LIU's defense continued to stifle Stonehill's offense, and the Sharks capped the scoring at the 17:31 mark with a goal from junior Valtteri Piironen, sealing a 6-1 victory.
