LOWELL, Mass. (December 18, 2024) – Stonehill College men's basketball dropped a non-conference matchup, 78-67, at the Costello Athletic Center against the University of Massachusetts Lowell Wednesday night.
LEADERS
- Sophomore Louie Semona (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Stonehill with 14 points while grabbing three rebounds with one assist, block, and steal.
- Graduate student Amir Nesbitt (Newport News, Va.) had 12 points off the bench and a team-high three assists with two rebounds.
- Junior Chas Stinson (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 12 points and corralled a team-high four rebounds as well as recording a team-high three steals.
- UMass Lowell's Quincy Clark led all scorers with 21 points on a 9-14 shooting night from the field. Max Brooks tallied 18 points on 6-7 shooting to go with six rebounds and three blocks for the River Hawks.
FIRST HALF
- UMass Lowell's Quincy Clark made the first two baskets of the game with back-to-back layups as the River Hawks opened the game on a 12-0 run.
- A three-pointer and pull-up from the mid-range from Nesbitt ended the UML run and made it 12-5 with just over 13 minutes left in the half.
- Junior Ethan Meuser (Shavertown, Pa.) drilled a pair of three-pointers, and Stinson converted on a strong driving layup to pull Stonehill within five, 18-13.
- Another Nesbitt three-pointer made it 18-16, and the Skyhawks took their first lead of the game, 20-19, after a throwdown from Semona and a steal and finish on the other end for Stinson.
- The two teams went back and forth over the final four minutes of the half but Stinson and Semona fueled a 7-0 run to give Stonehill a 33-30 lead.
- UMass Lowell's Anthony Blunt pulled up from deep at the buzzer, sinking the shot to send the teams into the break tied up, 33-33.
- Nesbitt led all first-half scorers with 10 points, while a pair of River Hawks, Max Brooks and Quincy Clark, had nine.
SECOND HALF
- Freshman Hermann Koffi (Quebec City, Quebec) scored the first bucket of the half to break the tie, but a trio of free throws from UML put the River Hawks back in front, 36-35.
- Graduate student Josh Morgan (Brampton, Ontario) sunk his first three of the game, and Semona drove to the rim for a transition layup to give Stonehill a four-point lead, 40-36.
- The River Hawks responded with a 13-0 run until an eventual layup from sophomore Todd Brogna (Southborough, Mass.) halted the run with UML leading 49-42.
- Another Brogna layup made it 50-46, but a 7-1 outburst from the River Hawks increased their lead to 10, 57-47 with nine minutes remaining in the game.
- UMass Lowell led the rest of the way, closing out the non-conference matchup with a 78-67 win.
NOTEWORTHY
- Stonehill is now 19-26 all-time against the River Hawks with a 7-14 record at the Costello Athletic Center. This was the third meeting between the two programs as Division I opponents as UML has come out on top in all three.
- This was just the second loss of the season for the Skyhawks with the starting lineup of Morgan, Koffi, Stinson, Brogna, and Meuser.
- After another double-digit scoring effort, Semona is averaging 15.3ppg over the last four games, with 10+ in three of those contests.
- Stinson recorded his sixth straight game with 2+ steals and fifth straight with at least three. His 2.2 steals per game ranks tied for second in the NEC.
- With the loss, Stonehill has dropped its last 28 road contests dating back to 2023, starting the season 0-6 away from Easton.

- Stonehill returns home to take on the University of New Hampshire on Sunday, December 22 at 1 p.m. for the Skyhawks' final non-conference game at Merkert Gymnasium.
