Capps headlines three Knights pitchers to combine for two-hit shutout

TEANECK, N.J. (March 17, 2024) – Postgraduate righthander Zac Capps and two relievers combined to toss a two-hit shutout as FDU completed a weekend sweep of its three game Northeast Conference baseball series with a 9-0 victory over Stonehill College at Naimoli Complex this afternoon.

Capps struck out ten in earning the win (1-3) on the mound as he scattered two hits over his seven shutout innings without a walk, facing three batters over the minimum for FDU. Junior righthander Chris Mattioli and postgrad righty Ian Barrett each added an inning of relief and retired all three batters they faced apiece, combining for three strikeouts as the Knights pitching trio didn't issue a walk all afternoon.

Freshman Nick Quagliato and postgrad Justin Sierra paced the FDU offense by hitting a combined 7-for-9 for the afternoon, leading a group of four Knights with multiple hits and RBI. Quagliato was 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, home run, two RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored, while Sierra hit 3-for-5 with three steals, two RBI and a run scored. Senior TJ Werner was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a stolen base, run scored and RBI, while classmate Zack Will finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Senior Trey Ciulla-Hall and junior Dylan Zemotel picked up Stonehill's two hits on the afternoon. Zemotel was 1-for-3 at the plate, while Ciulla-Hall finished 1-for-4 to extend his hit streak to three games. Sophomore righthander Peter Haas took the loss (1-4) on the mound for the Skyhawks, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks over four-plus innings.

How it Happened

  • FDU broke through with a run in the second inning when Quagliato singled to right after Haas struck out the first two batters of the inning. Quagliato then stole second and scored on a double to right from Werner.
  • FDU added a five-run fifth which proved to be more than enough offense on the day in support of the Knights pitching performance.
  • Quagliato led off the fifth with his first collegiate home run and then Werner followed with a double down the leftfield line, later scoring when Sierra reached on an error. Senior Hunter D'Amato followed with a two-run single and then scored on a single to center from Will,
  • FDU added a single run in the sixth and then two in the seventh when Will led off with a home run and then Quagliato added an RBI double to cap the scoring on the afternoon.

Noteworthy

  • Ciulla-Hall has a hit in nine of Stonehill's 12 games this season with his three-game hit streak after ending a string of 11-straight batters retired by Capps with his one-out single through the left side in the seventh inning.
  • Zemotel delivered Stonehill's first hit of the day with a two-out single in the third.
