HAMILTON, N.Y. (August 29, 2024) – Stonehill men's soccer fell, 3-1, at Beyer-Small '76 field against Colgate Thursday night in a non-conference matchup.
Highlights
- Sophomore Tiago Lima-Bittencourt (Charlotte, N.C.) scored his first goal of the season leading, the Skyhawks with three points on the year. Freshman Julius Maiwaldt (Asker, Norway) notched his first career point, assisting on Bittencourt's goal.
- Senior Colin Milliken (Easton, Mass.) and freshman Jack Kampe (Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded shots on goal for the Skyhawks.
- Sophomore Kyle Tencza (Waldwick, N.J.) notched a season-high three saves, his fifth career game with at least three stops in net.
- Colgate had six different Raiders record points in the win including goals from Liam Winograd, Conor Geraghty, and Cason Stafford.
How it Happened
Tencza faced his first test in the 17th minute when a shot was driven towards the net from the right side of the goal box off a perfect crossing pass but the sophomore goalie stood tall and swatted the ball away.
Milliken had a scoring chance in the 27th minute but was turned away by Colgate goalie
Oliver Townend to keep the score tied, 0-0.
The Raiders opened the scoring in the 30th minute as a corner kick that was taken short was lofted into the goalie box and was tapped into the back of the net with a header by
Liam Winograd to put Colgate up 1-0.
The Skyhawks nearly tied the score in the 33rd minute when Maiwaldt found himself open in the middle of the field with a lane to the net, but his shot went high and right.
Stonehill tied things up right before halftime when Maiwaldt placed a back-heel pass perfectly for Bittencourt on a give-and-go who rocketed a right-footed shot to the top left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Colgate took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute when
Conor Geraghty dove headfirst for a centering pass and managed to deflect it with the top of his head, redirecting it to the back left corner of the goal.
A lead pass from the far left sideline off the foot of
Jacob Baldwin trickled through the Skyhawk defense to
Cason Stafford who one-timed a right-footed shot that found the bottom-right corner of the net to put the Raiders up 3-1 in the 60th minute.
Milliken gave the Skyhawks a shot at scoring in the 81st minute, sending a cross off a corner kick to the center of the box that was headed on net by Kampe
but Townend made a diving save to protect the Colgate lead.
