Holy Cross Holds Off Field Hockey, 3-1

Crusaders answer Stark equalizer with two unanswered

WORCESTER, Mass. (August 30, 2024) – College of the Holy Cross scored two unanswered goals after a Stonehill College equalizer early in the second half to secure a 3-1 victory in a non-conference season-opening field hockey matchup at Hart Turf Field and Track this evening.

Highlights
  • Holy Cross got goals from three different players, with junior Julia Carrozza and freshman Jocelyn Monti scoring in the third and fourth quarter, respectively, to grab the lead for good and secure the season-opening win.
  • Freshman Mia McCloskey preserved the win with three saves, all in the third quarter, in her collegiate debut.
  • Sophomore Tyra Stark scored the first goal of the season for Stonehill that equalized the contest early in the second half.

How It Happened
  • Holy Cross grabbed the lead against the run of play with 1:49 remaining in the opening quarter as senior Meggan Fourie pounced on a rebound of an initial shot by fifth-year Sarah Potter that was saved by Conte off a penalty corner for Fourie's 16th career goal.
  • After a scoreless second quarter, in which neither team registered a shot, Stonehill got a deserved equalizer 2:20 into the third, when Stark belted home her fifth career goal off a corner insertion from freshman Siena De Roeck.
  • Carrozza restored the Holy Cross lead with 3:50 remaining in the third frame, assisted by junior Megan Schienbein.
  • Monti's first career goal in her collegiate debut provided the insurance tally for Holy Cross, assisted by sophomore Marissa MacLean, with 4:14 remaining in regulation.
Noteworthy
  • Stark's fifth career goal was the first of her tallies over her Stonehill career that was not a game winner, after all four of her goals as a freshman led to Skyhawk victories.
  • Stark has scored in two-straight games dating back to Stonehill's season-ending 4-0 win over Lindenwood University last October.
  • Conte has posted 291 career saves in 35 games played.
  • De Roeck dished an assist in her collegiate debut for Stonehill whose starting lineup featured six freshmen and two sophomores, with three more freshmen making their collegiate debut off the bench.
