Women's Soccer Drops First-Ever Meeting at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. (September 1, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team dropped its first-ever meeting at Dartmouth College, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 1-4 on the season, while the Big Green improved to 1-1 in the early campaign.

Highlights
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Bello tallied seven saves in goal for the Skyhawks.
  • Senior classmates Olivia Webster and Grace Caso registered lone shot attempts for the Skyhawks. Webster's shot attempt marked her first shot on goal this season.
  • Fifth-year student Daisy Granholm paved the way for Dartmouth, recording her first career hat trick in the first half.
  • Junior Mary Lundregaan and first-year classmates Lourdes Lauterborn and Emmanuella Frimpomaa each dished out two assists on the afternoon.
  • Sophomore Frankie Valverde registered three points on the day, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist.
  • First-year goalkeeper Mary Katherine Daly and fifth-year student Emily Hardy split time in goal and posted the Big Green's second clean sheet of the season.
How it Happened
Stonehill and Dartmouth traded early scoring chances throughout the opening minutes of play. A Big Green defensive slide tackle halted junior Hannah Anselmo's rush inside the 18-yard box before Bello would make a diving grab in goal for the Skyhawks to keep the game scoreless just under five minutes into play.

On the Big Green's second corner kick opportunity at the 6:59 mark of the contest, Granholm headed a ball to the inside of the far post for the game's opening score. Less than five minutes later, Granholm would draw a foul inside the box and be awarded a penalty kick that she'd capitalize on to give Dartmouth an early two-goal lead.

In the 12th minute of action, a stretch of quick passing from Stonehill by graduate student Kara Moore and Anselmo would eventually make its way to the boot of Caso, who sent the Skyhawk's first shot attempt just wide of the left side post.

Over the remainder of the opening half, Dartmouth would increase its advantage to 4-0 as senior Aleena Seales netted her first goal of the season at the 16:24 mark before Granholm capped off her first-career hat trick in the 19th minute with a redirect shot in front off a cross from Lundregan.

Coming out of the break, the Big Green immediately went on the press, pursuing the ball in the Skyhawks defensive end of the field. In the process, Dartmouth generated five shot attempts in the opening minutes. However, the Stonehill back-line of graduate students Yara Fawaz and Moore, as well as junior Rebecca Lancaster and first-year student Meghan Dowd, stood tall blocking shots and keeping Dartmouth off the board early in the second half.

However, at the 58:24 mark of the non-conference meeting, the Big Green tacked onto their lead as Frimpomaa found Valverde in front, who sent a shot to the right corner of the Stonehill net past an outstretched Bello, extending the Dartmouth lead to 5-0.

First-year student Emily Garrand, junior Jaidyn Curry, and junior Audrey Marin would cap off the scoring for the Big Green with three goals in the 70th, 73rd, and 84th minutes, respectively, to seal the decisive, 8-0, victory over Stonehill.
