WORCESTER, Mass. (September 12, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's tennis team defeated Assumption University at the Assumption Tennis Courts, 6-1, in a non-conference match to improve to 2-0 in the fall.
Highlights
- Junior captain Anneliese Beltran (Spring, Texas) and sophomore Julie Holte (Oslo, Norway) improved to 2-0 as a doubles pair this season, winning their matchup against Carolina Mader and Marie Knispel on the first court, 6-1.
- The Skyhawks swept all three doubles matches while winning five of the six singles matches to win 6-1 and start the season 2-0.
- Freshman Lilah Shallcross (Prospect, Ky.) made her collegiate debut, winning her doubles and singles matches.
How It Happened
- Sophomore Alice Brito do Rio (Angra do Heroismo, Portugal) and sophomore Madison Warren (Frederick, Md.) won in the doubles second court, 7-6, defeating Assumption's de Souza sisters, Carolina and Danielle.
- Shallcross and fellow freshman Arya Chabria (Columbus, Ohio) won in the third doubles court, 6-1, as Stonehill won all three doubles matches over the Greyhounds.
- On the first singles court, Holt won her match, 6-3, 6-0, over Laurence Bosmans to improve to 2-0 in both singles and doubles this season.
- Shallcross won on the second court, winning the first set, 6-2, before dropping the second, 6-4, forcing a third-set tiebreaker. Shallcross would win the third set, 10-4 to win her collegiate singles debut.
- Warren fell in two sets in the No. 3 slot, dropping her match against Marie Knispel, 6-4, 6-3.
- Beltran won her match in the fourth court despite dropping the first set, 6-2, against Carolina de Souza. Beltran would take the second set, 6-2, before winning the tiebreaker set, 6-3.
- Chabria also improved to 2-0 in singles this season, winning in the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-4, over Ina Bechle.
- Brito do Rio rounded out Thursday's match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Mia Monje as the Skyhawks defeated the Greyhounds, 6-1.
