Volleyball Sweeps Saint Peter’s, Falls to Providence in Pair of Morning Matches

Gonzalez Jaramillo and Graves earn All-Tournament Team honors at final day of Friar Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 14, 2024)The Stonehill College volleyball team defeated Saint Peter's in straight sets before falling to Providence on the final day of the Friar Invitational Saturday morning.
 
For their outstanding play throughout the three matches this weekend, freshman Paloma Gonzalez Jaramillo (Wylie, Texas) and senior Emma Graves (Vestal, N.Y.) were both named to the Friar Invitational All-Tournament Team.
 
Stonehill 3, Saint Peter's 0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22)
 
Highlights
  • Gonzalez Jaramillo had a team and career-high eight kills in the win for the Skyhawks, hitting at a .333 percentage.
  • Graves and sophomore Georgia Murphy (Plano, Texas) each had seven kills while Graves led the team with four block assists and Murphy had two aces and two block assists
  • Sophomore Maddie Schamaun (Rockville, Md.) recorded a team-high 17 assists and a team-best ten digs. Schamaun also had a career and match-high five aces.
  • Sophomore Amaya Parnell (Pepperell, Mass.) finished with 12 assists, three digs, and a team-high .667 hit percentage as she had two kills on three attack attempts.
SET 1 | After the Peacocks scored the first two points of the match, the Skyhawks went on a big run sparked by kills from freshman Gabi Polishuk (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and junior Kaitlyn Watson (Bellevue, Wash.) as Stonehill went up 8-4. The Skyhawks led by six at three different points in the set, 14-8, 16-10, and 19-13 but Saint Peter's rallied in the late stages of the opening set to make it a one-point game, 20-19. The Peacocks tied it up, 22-22, but three straight points for the Skyhawks, all off of attack errors, won Stonehill the set, 25-22.
 
SET 2 | Stonehill started the second set strong thanks to three kills from Gonzalez Jaramillo that gave the Skyhawks a 12-6 lead. Stonehill carried its momentum into a 15-8 advantage, the largest lead of the match for the Skyhawks. Another late push from Saint Peter's tied the score at 22-22 for the second consecutive set but back-to-back aces from Schamaun led the Skyhawks to another 25-22 set win.
 
SET 3 | The Peacocks jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the third set, holding their four-point lead, 10-6, after five points from both sides. A 4-0 run for the Skyhawks, with two more aces from Schamaun, led to a 10-10 tie, but Saint Peter's responded with three points of their own to retake the lead. The Peacocks remained in front, 19-16, but Stonehill took its first lead of the set thanks to a 6-1 run, giving the Skyhawks a 22-20 lead. Kills from Gonzalez Jaramillo and an ace from Polishuk won the Skyhawks the match with three straight 25-22 set wins.
 
Providence 3, Stonehill 1 (11-25, 24-26, 25-21, 19-25)
 
Highlights
  • Graves led Stonehill with 10.5 points in the loss, netting eight kills as she has recorded 6+ kills in seven of the 10 matches this season. Graves also had a season-high five block assists and three digs.
  • Gonzalez Jaramillo also had eight kills for the Skyhawks as the freshman has had at least five kills in four of the last five matches.
  • Senior Leah Michalowski (Holden, Mass.) had six kills on seven attempts, recording a season-best .857 hit percentage for the Skyhawks. Michalowski also tallied a career-high seven block assists on the defensive end for Stonehill.
  • Parnell led the Skyhawks with 20 helpers while Schamaun had 16 assists and a team-high 11 digs to go with two aces.
  • Providence had three Friars record 10+ kills including Shaliyah Rhoden who led all scorers with 15 kills.
SET 1 | Providence controlled the first set early on, building a 10-3 lead and never looking back. After a pair of kills from the Skyhawks made it 17-11 in favor of the Friars, Providence scored the final eight points of the set, winning the opening frame, 25-11.
 
SET 2 | The second set was a completely different story as Stonehill took an early 8-4 lead before increasing it to 12-7 as Gonzalez Jaramillo notched three kills. The Skyhawks continued to add to their lead, increasing to seven, 16-9. Providence started to claw its way back into the set, going on a 6-1 run, but a pair of errors ended the run as Stonehill led 20-16 late in the frame. The Friars took a one-point lead with five straight scores, but the Skyhawks made it set point, 24-23. Providence notched the last three points, winning the second set, 26-24.
 
SET 3 | Stonehill took another 12-7 lead early in the third set as Graves recorded three straight kills for the Skyhawks. Stonehill had a 17-9 lead when the Friars rallied for six straight points, but the Skyhawks used a run of their own to keep a comfortable six-point lead, 23-17. Providence scored the next four points, but it was too late as Polishuk put the set away, 25-21, with a service ace.
 
SET 4 | The Friars trailed early, 3-2, but the Skyhawk lead would be wiped away soon after as Providence led the rest of the set. Stonehill strung together a 6-1 run late in the set to make the score 22-19, but three straight points from the Friars won Providence the set and the match, 25-19.

Stonehill Volleyball has two weeks off, playing its next match on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Andrew Laska Gymnasium in Worcester, Mass. for a tri-match hosted by Assumption University, playing the Greyhounds at 11 a.m. before taking on Felician University at 1:30 p.m.
