Bryant Overcomes Field Hockey, 1-0

Bulldogs keep Skyhawks offense quiet for second-straight shutout win

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (September 20, 2024) – Freshman Maud van Lierop made seven second half saves to make Bryant University's first half goal stand and collect a 1-0 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Steven '69 and Lily Cowen Field this afternoon.

Highlights
  • Van Lierop and sophomore Sara DeSousa combined to make nine saves to preserve a second-straight shutout win for Bryant. DeSousa made two stops in the first half, before van Lierop did the rest with seven saves in the second half to seal the win.
  • Senior Caitlin Gallagher scored the lone goal of the contest on the Bulldogs only penalty corner of the day.
  • Freshmen Linde van Leeuwen and Filou Verhoeven assisted on the Bulldogs goal.
  • Stonehill's defensive backline of sophomore Julieta D'Antonio and freshmen Tia-May Harlos and Jill Miller protected the Skyhawks defensive end that limited Bryant to just three shots and one penalty corner on the afternoon.
How It Happened
  • DeSousa made stops in each of the first two quarters to keep Stonehill off the scoreboard and Gallagher converted on Bryant's lone penalty corner of the day slotting in her third goal of the season 5:24 into the second frame from the left side off a pass from van Leeuwen following the corner injection by Verhoeven.
  • van Lierop did the rest in a second half in which Stonehill outshot the hosts 10-1 and forced seven of its ten corners by stopping all seven shots on goal she faced to hold the Skyhawks scoreless for a fourth-straight game.
  • Stonehill finished with a 17-3 advantage in shots for the contest, including 9-1 on target, posting a 10-1 edge in penalty corners for the contest.
