Vermont Shuts Out Field Hockey

Priestly nets pair of goals to lead Catamounts past Skyhawks

BURLINGTON, Vt. (September 29, 2024) – The University of Vermont scored a pair of goals over the first two quarters on its way to a 5-0 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Moulton Winder Field this afternoon.

  • Junior Maddie Priestly scored a pair of goals to lead Vermont on offense.
  • Freshman Merle Vaandrager made four of her six saves in the fourth quarter to secure the shutout victory for the Catamounts.
  • Senior Ellie Reed and freshman Marie Dijkstra each contributed a goal and assist for Vermont.
  • Senior Lotte Kanters rounded out the Catamount goal scorers.
  • Senior Shannon Conte and junior Madison Shorey shared the goalkeeping duties for Stonehill. Conte played the first three quarters without being credited with a save, while Shorey played the fourth to make her season debut.
How It Happened
  • Priestly's first goal of the game opened the scoring 6:13 into the game when she scored off a pass from senior Lauren Schellhamer.
  • Dijkstra doubled the Catamounts lead with 1:37 remaining in the opening quarter, assisted by Reed.
  • Dijkstra turned provider on Vermont's third goal, setting up Kanters' goal 4:36 into the quarter.
  • Reed gave the Catamounts their four-goal halftime lead with her marker with 3:50 to play in the second quarter.
  • Stonehill wouldn't go down quietly, outshooting the hosts 9-2 in the second half after being at the short end of those same totals in the first, while producing seven of its eight penalty corners in the final half hour, including six in the fourth quarter alone, but was unable to crack Vaandrager who made four stops in the final frame.
  • Priestly's second goal of the contest capped the scoring with 1:27 to play, assisted by senior Meg Weyer.
