Volleyball Drops Opening Match at Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (September 6, 2024)The Stonehill College volleyball team fell, 3-0, to Harvard University at the Malkin Athletic Complex in the opening match of the two-day Harvard Invitational.

Highlights
  • Junior Mia Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) led the Skyhawks with seven kills, her fourth match of 7+ kills this season. Berardino also had three digs and an ace.
  • Senior Emma Graves (Vestal, N.Y.) had her fourth match with six or more kills while putting up a career-high four digs on the defensive end. She also notched a season-high four block assists and a .385 hit percentage
  • Sophomore Abby Farrell (Reading, Mass.) tied her career-high of four block assists to go with five kills on a season-high .364 hit percentage.
  • Sophomore Amaya Parnell (Pepperell, Mass.) and sophomore Maddie Schamaun (Rockville, Md.) split the setting duties, each posting nine assists in the match. Schamaun led the Skyhawks with 12 digs, setting a new career high.
SET 1 | Harvard jumped out to a 5-2 advantage early in the first set but Stonehill came back with six of the next seven points, taking an 8-6 lead. The set would go back and forth the rest of the way, tying 16 times with Graves landing a kill late, putting the Skyhawks ahead 22-21. The Crimson didn't waver, scoring the next four points to secure a 25-22 set victory. Graves and Berardino notched three kills apiece in the opening frame while Harvard was led by Corinne Furey and Riley Resmer, each notching five kills.
 
SET 2 | Furey had another five kills in the second set that was controlled by the Crimson most of the way, fueled by a 16-6 run that gave Harvard a 19-10 lead. The hosts would win the second set, 25-14, giving the Crimson a 2-0 match advantage. Berardino had another three kills in the set to lead the Skyhawks.
 
SET 3 | The third set started much like the first, going back and forth early on but Harvard would build a six-point gap, 16-10, over the Skyhawks thanks to a 6-2 run. Stonehill rallied with a 5-1 run of its own as Graves came through with a kill to make it to trim the Skyhawks deficit to just two points, 17-15. Harvard ended the match on an 8-2 run, winning the third and final set, 25-17.

Stonehill Volleyball will play another two matches tomorrow at the Malkin Athletic Center in Cambridge, Mass., taking on the University of New Hampshire at 10 a.m. and Merrimack College at 4 p.m. to conclude the Harvard Invitational.
