Milliken Leads Men’s Soccer Over Iona for Second Consecutive Win

EASTON, Mass. (September 7, 2024) – Senior Colin Milliken (Easton, Mass.) scored a goal and had an assist for the second time in as many games as Stonehill men's soccer defeated Iona University, 2-1, at W.B. Mason Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Highlights
  • Milliken tallied three points with a goal and an assist for the second consecutive game while netting the game-winner over the Gaels with a penalty kick in the 74th minute.
  • Sophomore Tiago Lima-Bittencourt (Charlotte, N.C.) scored the opening goal of the match in the 13th minute, his second of the season.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Sloan (Tallahassee, Fla.) notched a career-high 11 saves, the most in a game for a Skyhawk goalie since Sept. 18, 2021, when Andrew Hammersley had 12 in a 3-2 loss against Assumption University.
  • Sloan improves his save percentage to .792 and his record to 2-1-0 this year. His 1.49 goals allowed per game ranks in the top three in the Northeast Conference.
  • Freshman Nate Monteiro (Brockton, Mass.) drew the Iona foul in the box to draw the Stonehill penalty kick, setting up Milliken for what would be the game-winning goal.
  • This is the first two-game win streak for the Skyhawks at the division I level and the first since Sept. 4 and Sept. 8, 2021.
How it Happened
The Skyhawks opened the scoring in the 13th minute as Lima-Bittencourt found an opening just outside the 18-yard box off a Milliken pass, rocketing a left-footed shot to the far corner of the goal past the dive of Hesse for the opening score.

Sloan tallied three saves in the first half, all of which he handled with ease to keep the Skyhawks ahead by one until the halftime whistle.

Iona controlled the ball for the majority of the second half, finding a pair of scoring opportunities in the 49th and 52nd minute but Sloan made a dive to his left to keep Stonehill in front on both occasions.

The Skyhawks conceited a free kick in the 62nd minute and Iona's Jad Benjelloun capitalized with a cross into the box, ricocheting off the head of Tim Timchenko past Sloan who was frozen in the middle of the net as the ball bounced into the back right corner of the goal to tie the game, 1-1.

In the 73rd minute, Monteiro would get fouled in the box by the Gaels as the Skyhawks made the most of one of their few offensive attacks, giving the Skyhawks a penalty kick opportunity. Milliken would step up for Stonehill, blasting a right-footed shot past the diving Iona goalkeeper, Michael Hesse, to give Stonehill the 2-1 lead.

Sloan would make three more saves down the stretch for the Skyhawks while freshman Henrik Olsvik (Asker, Norway) made a team save for Stonehill as the Gaels fired off a flurry of shots in the 81st minute.

Sloan's 11th and final save came in the 88th but the visitors from Iona were turned away as a last-ditch effort from outside the box came hurling toward the bottom right corner of the net before the sophomore goalkeeper stepped in front.
