Women's Soccer Late Goal Not Enough as Maine Claims 4-1 Victory

ORONO, Maine. (September 8, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision on the road at the University of Maine Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 1-6 overall, while the Black Bears improved to 3-1-2 on the season.

Highlights
  • Last season's leader in scoring for the Skyhawks, senior forward Grace Caso, netted her first goal of the season in the second half.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Bello registered four saves in goal for Stonehill.
  • Junior Hannah Anselmo and first-year student Erin Foley each registered shots on goal for Stonehill.
  • Graduate student Kristina Kelly paved the way for the Maine offense, tallying four points on the afternoon off a goal and two assists.
  • Graduate student Kayla Kraemer tallied a pair of goals while her sister, senior Abby Kraemer, dished out an assist on the day for the Black Bears.
  • Graduate goalkeeper Jessica Kasacek picked up her third win of the season in goal for Maine after tallying two saves and only allowing one goal.
How it Happened
Maine wasted little time jumping out to an early lead, and at just 1:53 into the contest, Kayla Kraemer got the Black Bears on the board, netting her second goal of the season off an assist from Kelly. Eight minutes later, Stonehill nearly tied the game up at one when Anselmo rifled a shot from just outside the 18-yard box toward the right post of the Maine net. However, Kasacek would dive to her right and make her first of two saves on the afternoon, keeping the Skyhawks off the board early.

At the 17:25 mark, Kelly doubled the Black Bears' advantage, flipping the narrative on the opening goal with an assist from Kraemer, who capitalized on a Kelly assist to open the scoring earlier in the game.

Following Kelly's first goal of the year, Maine would outshoot Stonehill 6-2 over the remainder of the opening half as the Black Bears took a two-goal lead into the halftime break.
Coming out into the second half of action, Maine would extend its lead to three in the 48th minute after Kayla Kraemer found the back of the net for her second goal of the game and third of the season.

Over the next 27 minutes of play, Stonehill's back line and Bello in goal stood tall, keeping Maine off the board while facing seven shot attempts and a pair of corner kicks. Eventually, at the 74:54 mark of the contest, the Skyhawks would strike the scoresheet as Caso netted her first goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

However, despite Stonehill's late goal, Maine would add one more in the 88th minute off the boot of senior Lara Kirkby, capping off the game's scoring and sealing the Black Bears' 4-1 victory.
