How it Happened
Stonehill came out strong in the opening minutes of the conference matchup, testing DeMarinis and the Purple Knights' defense with seven shots, five of which were on goal, in the first five minutes of play. At the 5:05 mark of the first period, Saint Michael's earned its first power-play opportunity after a tripping penalty was called on the Skyhawks.
Stonehill's penalty-killing unit successfully stifled the Purple Knights' power-play, keeping the game scoreless in the early stages of the series opener. Just over two minutes after the conclusion of Saint Michael's power-play, Stonehill broke the deadlock. Barrett fired a shot from the point that was redirected by junior
Maddison Achtyl to a wide-open Dyring-Andersen, who one-timed a wrist shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season, giving the Skyhawks the first lead of the game.
At the 13:19 mark of the opening period, while shorthanded, Connolly doubled the Skyhawks' lead with her second shorthanded goal of the season and third overall lamp lighter in the last three games. The graduate center forced a turnover in the neutral zone, went on a breakaway, and deked out DeMarinis before backhanding the puck over the goal line for her fourth goal of the year, putting Stonehill up 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
Carrying a two-goal advantage into the second period, Stonehill sought to continue its offensive momentum, outshooting Saint Michael's 5-0 in the first six minutes of the frame. Despite the early offensive pressure, Saint Michael's responded by tying the game with a power-play goal from Quinn at 9:03 and a redirect by Leys at 13:01, leveling the score at 2-2.
Following Saint Michael's second goal of the period, Stonehill sophomore
Peyton Wise came close to reclaiming the lead, ringing a shot off the crossbar at the 15:54 mark. Just three minutes later, at 18:53, Turcotte delivered what would prove to be the game-winning goal with a routine dump into the offensive zone that bounced through DeMarinis' pads, giving the Skyhawks a 3-2 advantage heading into the third period.
In the final frame, Stonehill dominated possession, outshooting Saint Michael's 15-2. With the Skyhawks continuing their offensive onslaught, Feeney capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal at 18:26, securing a 4-2 victory for Stonehill.
