ERIE, Pa. – Sophomore
Nate Monteiro lifted Stonehill men's soccer above Mercyhurst with his game-winning goal in the 89
th minute to propel the Skyhawks to the 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
STONEHILL HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Nate Monteiro recorded two second half goals, including the game-winner with just over a minute to play in the contest.
- Monteiro's two goals is a new career single-game high for him and gives him three on the season.
- Sophomore Cade Likhite earned his second straight win of the season.
- Sophomore James Forrest-Hay added a goal and an assist for three points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercyhurst struck first scoring two minutes into the game but the Skyhawks remained unfazed and went to work. With 10 minutes to play with the first period, junior
Chris Hines ripped a shot towards the net. The Lakers' goalkeeper Gonzalo Onrubia came up with the save, but was unable to corral the ball allowing sophomore
James Forrest-Hay to knock in the equalizer.
The game remained tied at 1-1 going into the halftime break. Midway through the second half, senior
Shane Fonseca connect with
Nate Monteiro to take a 2-1 lead. It was a short-lived lead as Mercyhurst scored three minutes later to tie contest.
It looked as though that's where the game was going end until the final 1:20 of the game. Forrest-Hay added to his stat line finding Montiero at the top of the 18-yard-box. The Brockton, Massachusetts drilled a line drive into the top of the goal to give the Skyhawks their second NEC win of the season.
