WEYMOUTH, Mass. (February 19, 2025) – The Stonehill College women's lacrosse team suffered a 20-15 defeat to UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon at the Union Point Sports Complex in Weymouth, Massachusetts. With the loss, the Skyhawks moved to 0-2 on the season, while the River Hawks improved to 4-0.

Highlights
  • Junior Natalie Coutu led the Skyhawks' offensive attack, setting a new career high with six goals on seven shot attempts, boasting an impressive shooting percentage of 85.7%.
  • Juniors Grace Murphy and Emily LaPia each contributed four goals, bringing their season totals to seven and five, respectively.
  • Junior Julia Kogan dominated in the circle, securing a game-high 10 draw controls.
  • First-year student Maia Parker scored the first goal of her collegiate career.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Nina Tremonte recorded nine saves in goal for the Skyhawks.
  • Sophomore Chloe Bowers propelled the River Hawks' offense, tying her career high with five goals.
  • Juniors Grace Lydon, Audra Hansen, and senior Jade Catlin each scored four goals for UMass Lowell.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Kuhn earned her fourth win of the season, registering 11 saves in the non-conference matchup.
How it Happened
After falling behind 2-0 within the first three minutes of play, the Skyhawks responded with an offensive surge, scoring six of the next eight goals in the opening quarter to take a 6-3 lead into the second. LaPia and Coutu each scored two goals in the first quarter to fuel Stonehill's attack.

However, UMass Lowell quickly regained control, scoring nine consecutive goals to open the second quarter and take a commanding 10-3 lead. Lydon's three goals in the period, including one on a player-up opportunity, were key in helping the River Hawks build a 13-6 advantage with just under four minutes remaining in the first half. Despite the scoring drought, Stonehill managed to net two goals in the final three minutes of the half, cutting their deficit to five heading into the break.

In the second half, the teams traded shots until the 10:21 mark, when Murphy netted her third of four goals on the day with a free-position shot, bringing the Skyhawks within four. However, that would be as close as Stonehill would come, as UMass Lowell regained their offensive rhythm, scoring five of the next six goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to 18-10.

Heading into the final frame, the Skyhawks fought to close the gap, outscoring UMass Lowell 5-2 in the fourth quarter. Despite the effort, the River Hawks' lead proved insurmountable, and Stonehill ultimately fell short with a final score of 20-15.
