How It Happened
In the opening five minutes of play, LIU controlled the offensive zone, registering 10 shot attempts compared to Stonehill's zero. Despite facing significant pressure, Skyhawks goaltender Androlewicz and the defense stood strong, keeping the Sharks off the board early in the first period.
Stonehill's first shot on goal came at 8:16 when freshman
Cole Melady fired a puck toward the net. The teams then settled into a back-and-forth defensive battle, resulting in a scoreless tie at the end of the first 20 minutes.
To start the second period, Stonehill was awarded its first power-play opportunity, just 14 seconds in. However, despite the advantage, the Skyhawks were unable to break the deadlock, and the score remained 0-0 through the first two minutes of the frame.
At 8:13, following the conclusion of the Skyhawks' second power-play chance, Rapalje put LIU on the board with his 14th goal of the season. With just over two minutes remaining in the second, LIU came close to doubling its lead when graduate student
Connor Gregga fired a shot off the crossbar.
Stonehill responded at the 18:14 mark, when Ireland's sharp-angled shot found its way through the pads of Outen and across the goal line, evening the score at 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
The third period was a back-and-forth affair, with three power-play opportunities and a total of 16 shots on goal between the two teams. The 60 minutes of regulation concluded with a 1-1 tie, forcing a five-minute, three-on-three overtime period to decide the game.
Stonehill's penalty kill unit came up big early in overtime, shutting down the Sharks' power play and allowing their offense to gain momentum. With just under 10 seconds remaining before a shootout, Stonehill drew a second penalty. Orr, after retrieving a pass from Campione in a puck battle along the boards, one-timed a shot past Outen with 0.4 seconds left, securing the victory and sending the Skyhawks into celebration. Orr's team-leading third overtime goal of the season gave Stonehill the win.
