Women's Hockey Shuts Out Assumption 1-0 in Senior Day Victory

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (February 22, 2025) – The Stonehill College women's hockey team celebrated its three seniors—Maeve Connolly, Sarah Taylarand Josie Mendeszoonfollowing a 1-0 shutout victory over Assumption University in a New England Women's Hockey Alliance matchup. With the win, the Skyhawks concluded the regular season with an overall record of 13-17-5 and a 13-10-5 mark in conference play. The Greyhounds finished their season with a 10-21-3 record overall and 10-16-2 in conference action.

Highlights
  • As a team, Stonehill outshot Assumption 35-11, marking the least number of shots the Skyhawks have allowed in a single game in program history.
  • Connolly netted her sixth goal off Mendeszoon and junior Lily Geist's fourth and fifth assists of the season, respectively.
  • First-year netminder Alexsa Caron, after surpassing the 1,000 career saves milestone in her last outing, set another single-season program record after registering her fourth shutout of the season.
  • Mendeszoon and junior Kathryn Karo paved the way for the Skyhawks at the faceoff circle, combining to win 21 of 33 faceoffs in the afternoon.
  • Sophomore Pusle Dyring-Andersen posted a game-high three blocked shots for Stonehill.
  • Sophomore Caroline Lilley tallied a team-high three shots on goal for Assumption.
  • Graduate goaltender Carissa Mudrak recorded 34 saves on 35 shots faced in between the pipes for the Greyhounds.
How it Happened
Stonehill came out strong in the opening 20 minutes, generating its first power-play opportunity of the night and firing 12 shots on goal compared to just three from Assumption. Despite consistent offensive pressure, which included two excellent scoring chances from junior Brianna Walkom in quick succession at 11:18 and 11:26, the Skyhawks were unable to find the back of the net. As a result, both teams entered the first intermission scoreless.

Out of the break, Stonehill maintained its offensive momentum, outshooting Assumption 13-4 in the first 10 minutes of the second period, with four of those shots on goal. At the 12:19 mark, sophomore Peyton Wise nearly broke the deadlock with a point-blank shot on goal. However, Assumption's goalkeeper, Mudrak, made a key save, keeping the game tied.

At 16:44 of the second period, Connolly finally broke the scoreless tie on the power play, notching her sixth goal of the season. After a pass from Geist in front of the boards, Connolly capitalized on a loose puck just outside the crease, pushing it past the goaltender to give Stonehill a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after, Dyring-Andersen made a crucial play, blocking a shot from sophomore Jenna Chaplain and helping preserve the lead as the Skyhawks headed into the second intermission.

The third period saw both teams exchange offensive pushes, combining for 10 shots on goal. With the game still tight and the Skyhawks leading by one, Assumption pulled its goaltender in the final minutes, looking for the equalizer. However, despite the Greyhounds' effort to score the game-tying goal, Stonehill's defense stood strong, preventing any shots on goal during the final 10 minutes to secure a narrow 1-0 victory on Senior Day.
