How it Happened
Stonehill started strong, earning two power-play opportunities and registering 12 shot attempts compared to just three by Post in the first 10 minutes of the game. However, the Eagles' penalty kill unit successfully neutralized both Skyhawks' power-play chances, keeping the score tied through the early stages of the conference matchup.
With just under five minutes remaining in the opening period, junior
Kathryn Karo had a prime opportunity to give Stonehill the lead while shorthanded. Karo forced a turnover at the Post defensive blue line and broke free on a breakaway, but Eagles' goalie Saunders stood tall in net, denying the Skyhawks' scoring chance and keeping the game scoreless as the teams headed to the first intermission.
The second period began with a back-and-forth exchange, as both teams traded power-play opportunities. Midway through the frame, Walkom broke the deadlock with her first goal of the season. Whynot sent a pass up the ice to Kenmore, who found Walkom entering the offensive zone. Walkom then fired a shot past Saunders' blocker, giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
Following Walkom's goal, both teams continued to trade power-play chances throughout the remainder of the second period. On their fourth power play of the game, first-year defender
Seina Spadone nearly doubled the Skyhawks' lead with a shot that rang off the crossbar at the 16:34 mark.
Carrying a one-goal lead into the third period, Stonehill's defense, led by goalie Stone, sought to maintain the advantage and secure a weekend sweep over Post. In the final minutes of the third, the Eagles were awarded their fifth power-play opportunity and pulled their goalie for a two-skater advantage.
Despite facing nine shot attempts in the final two minutes, Stonehill's defense held strong. Key blocked shots from juniors
Sarah Taylar and
Bailey Feeney kept Post from finding the equalizer, ensuring the Skyhawks' 1-0 victory and completing the weekend sweep.
