LORETTO, Pa. (March 14, 2025) – The Stonehill College softball team's comeback effort fell short in its Northeast Conference (NEC) opener to Saint Francis University, 10-9, Friday afternoon in Loretto, Pennsylvania. With the loss, the Skyhawks dropped to 6-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Red Flash improved to 7-13 overall and 1-0 against conference opponents.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill wasted no time establishing an early lead, securing a three-run advantage over Saint Francis in the top of the first inning. The Skyhawks' offensive surge was led by sophomore
Harper Sullivan and senior
Shannon Conte.
Sullivan set the tone with a two-run single to right field, followed by Conte, who laced an RBI double to the opposite field, scoring Sullivan and giving Stonehill a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the opening frame.
The Red Flash quickly responded, sending 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, rallying to score 10 runs and take a commanding 10-3 lead heading into the second.
After a scoreless second and third inning, Stonehill began to chip away at the deficit in the fourth. The Skyhawks plated four runs, starting with sophomore
Piper Hofmann, who drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in their fourth run. Sullivan and Conte then delivered back-to-back hits, with Sullivan driving in two with a single up the middle and Conte adding an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
In the top of the fifth, with Stonehill trailing by three, senior
Isabella Therrien launched a two-run home run over the center field wall, narrowing the deficit to 10-9 as the game headed into the later innings.
Despite a strong push, including a chance to tie the game with the tying run on third in the top of the ninth, Stonehill's rally fell short. The Red Flash pitching staff held firm over the final two frames, securing a 10-9 victory at home.
