LORETTO, PA. (March 15, 2025) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped a pair of Northeast Conference matchups at Saint Francis on Saturday, 13-2 and 10-6, as the Red Flash completed the weekend sweep.
GAME 1 – Saint Francis 13 (9-13, 2-0 NEC), Stonehill 2 (6-10, 0-2 NEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with freshman
Taylor Schoonmaker (Averill Park, N.Y.) driving in senior
Emily Nardelli (North Attleboro, Mass.) on a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
Sophomore
Alexa Hospodar (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) gave up a pair of singles in the third and the Red Flash tied the score, 1-1, on a sacrifice fly. Hospodar allowed just four hits and one run through the first four innings of play.
The Red Flash offense came alive in the fifth, with Hospodar allowing five hits and walking two as Saint Francis took a 5-1 lead. A bases loaded double capped off the inning as Saint Francis led, 8-1 after the fifth.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth when
Aliya Garroway hit a grand slam over the center field fence to make the score 13-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Five different Skyhawks recorded base hits with sophomore Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) hitting her second double of the season.
- Schoonmaker recorded her first career RBI while senior Isabella Therrien (Auburn, Mass.) tallied her fifth.
- Hospodar falls to 2-3 in the circle this season as she finished with nine hits and eight runs given up despite her strong start to the game.
- The Red Flash had 14 base hits, led by Hannah Bendle and Garroway, who each had three.
GAME 2 – Saint Francis 10 (10-13, 3-0 NEC), Stonehill 6 (6-11, 0-3 NEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, the Skyhawks loaded the bases in the second and Schoonmaker capitalized, lining a double to left field to drive in both Therrien and Nardelli, giving the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead.
The Red Flash responded in the bottom half of the second as the first six Saint Francis batters reached base in the inning, putting them ahead, 4-2.
Senior
Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) cut the Skyhawk deficit in half in the third inning, lining an RBI single to center field. Saint Francis also added one run in the third inning on an RBI single.
Stonehill made it a one-run game in the fifth inning when Sullivan drove in sophomore
Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) but the Skyhawks could've done more damage as the Red Flash got out of a bases-loaded jam to end the inning.
Saint Francis pulled away with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Red Flash tallied two RBI singles and a two-run double in the inning to lead 10-4.
Stonehill sparked a rally in the seventh but the Skyhawks could only plate two runs in the inning, falling 10-6.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After tallying her first career RBI earlier in the day, Schoonmaker followed it up with a three-RBI game, going 2-4 with a pair of doubles and a stolen base.
- Hofmann went 2-5 with a run scored and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot while Terrien went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
- Conte had a 3-3 day at the plate and Sullivan had another multi-hit game with one RBI.
- Sophomore Alex Sciarretto (Bristol, Conn.) falls to 1-4 in the circle, pitching one inning while allowing four runs (three earned).
- Junior Lauren Donovan (Marblehead, Mass.) pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one walk while holding Saint Francis scoreless with one strikeout.
