Hofmann Hits Two Home Runs as Softball Splits Midweek Doubleheader Versus Holy Cross

EASTON, MASS. (March 26, 2025) – The Stonehill College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Holy Cross at Fr. Gartland Field on Wednesday, with sophomore Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) blasting home runs in each game to lead the Skyhawks.

GAME 1 – F/8 Holy Cross 8 (5-18, 0-3 Patriot), Stonehill 4 (6-18, 0-6 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Holy Cross took a 2-0 lead after hitting solo home runs in the second and third innings, but Hofmann got the Skyhawks offense going in the bottom of the third when she lined her first home run of the season to dead center to cut the Crusaders lead in half, 2-1.

Sophomore Alex Sciarretto (Bristol, Conn.) and Holy Cross's Sophia Roncone were dominant over the next three innings as Sciarretto held the Crusaders hitless and Roncone allowed just three hits and no runs heading into the seventh inning.

Holy Cross scored in the top of the seventh thanks to a sacrifice fly to go up 3-1 but the Skyhawks responded in the bottom of the seventh as senior Paige Wodarski (Danvers, Mass.) and freshman Taylor Schoonmaker (Averill Park, N.Y.) led off the inning with singles, setting up Hofmann who laced a double into the right-centerfield gap. One run scored on the double and the tying run came across on an RBI groundout from freshman Jenny Olson (Salem, N.H.).

The Crusaders got out of the seventh inning with the score tied and teed off extra innings with a two-run home run to break the tie instantly in the top of the eighth. Holy Cross added a solo homer the next at-bat and eventually plated two more runs in the inning to build an 8-3 advantage.

Stonehill scored once in the bottom of the eighth, but that's all the Skyhawks could muster up as Holy Cross won the first game of the doubleheader, 8-4.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sciarretto falls to 1-6 on the year, going 7 IP, allowing seven hits, eight runs (six earned), while striking out four.
  • Hofmann had a perfect game at the plate, going 4-4 with a home run, double, two runs batted in, and a run scored.
  • Senior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) drew two walks, driving in a run on one of them while Olson drove in her second RBI of the season.
  • Ali Sniegocki had a 2-4 day at the plate for the Crusaders, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs while scoring twice herself.

GAME 2 – Stonehill 11 (7-18, 0-6 NEC), Holy Cross 8 (5-19, 0-3 Patriot)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After going 4-4 in the first game, Hofmann's first at-bat of the second game was a two-run homer to right field to give the Skyhawks an early 2-0 lead. Freshman Melanie Snyder (Howard Beach, N.Y.) poked an RBI single through the right side of the infield in the same inning as Stonehill led 3-0 after the first.

In the third inning, Schoonmaker hit a sacrifice fly, Snyder lasered an RBI double to right center field, and redshirt junior May Dawes (Beacon Falls, Conn.) had an RBI groundout to increase the Skyhawks lead to 5-0.

Junior Lauren Donovan (Marblehead, Mass.) started the game for the Skyhawks, pitching four shutout innings until Emma Fong got the Crusaders on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth. Snyder hit a home run of her own in the bottom half of the inning, the first of her career, as Stonehill held onto an 8-2 lead heading into the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, Holy Cross began to string a rally together with two RBI singles that made the score 8-4, eventually leading to Emma Fong's second home run of the game, another two-run shot that trimmed Stonehill's lead to two, 8-6.

Olson walked in the bottom of the seventh and stole second to reach scoring position. She would score on a groundball that never left the infield after some heads-up baserunning after a bobble from the Holy Cross shortstop to make the score 9-6. Senior Isabella Therrien (Auburn, Mass.) added two more insurance runs later in the inning, launching her third home run of the season to left-center field.

The Crusaders didn't go away, scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh but sophomore Alexa Hospodar (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) secured the 11-8 win for the Skyhawks with her second save of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Therrien improved on her team-leading .333 batting average after a 3-4 performance at the plate with a home run, two singles, three runs scored, and two RBI.
