Skyhawks Secure #2 Seed in NEC Tournament with Win at Wagner

Skyhawks finish NEC play with 11-5 record, will host Wagner in first round of NEC playoffs on Monday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (March 6, 2025) – The Stonehill College women's basketball team ended its regular season slate on a high note, defeating Wagner College, 68-60, at the Spiro Sports Center Thursday night.

With the win, the Skyhawks lock up the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Conference Championship tournament beginning on Monday, March 10. Stonehill will host Wagner at Merkert Gym at 6 p.m. in a rematch of tonight's game.

Leaders
Sophomore Brooke Paquette (Hudson, N.H.) had the second-best scoring night of her career, tallying 25 points, making 6-of-9 shots from the field, 2-of-4 from long range, and 11-of-14 from the charity stripe. She also led the team with eight rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Megan Sias (Toms River, N.J.) went 5-for-7 from the floor, scoring 13 points while corralling six rebounds, blocking two shots, and swiping two steals.

Sophomore Breana Delaney (Marlboro, N.J.) knocked down a career-high three three-pointers en route to 11 points and three rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.

Wagner's Taleah Washington led the Seahawks with 22 points, going 8-for-16 with five rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes.

How it Happened
Stonehill's offense got off to a slow start against the Seahawks, making one shot with seven turnovers through the first five minutes of the game as Wagner took an 11-3 lead early on. Once the Skyhawks began to take care of the ball, the shots started falling as Delaney ended the quarter with back-to-back threes to cap off a 10-2 Stonehill run leading to a 13-13 tie after one.

In a back-and-forth second quarter, Sias and Washington traded buckets on almost every possession as the Skyhawk freshman finished with 11 points while Washington had nine points for the Seahawks. The two teams were separated by one point at the break as Wagner led 29-28.

Similar to the second quarter, no team could gain an edge as five scorers got on the board for each team in a 15-15 frame. Paquette scored seven of her 25 points in the third quarter while Washington added another six points to keep Wagner ahead by one, 44-43.

Stonehill started the fourth quarter on an 8-1 run to build its largest lead of the game up to that point, 51-45, with Paquette scoring all eight of the Skyhawks' points during the stretch. Five straight points from Julia Fabozzi ended the Stonehill scoring spree and sparked a 12-5 run for Wagner as the Seahawks took a 57-56 lead with just 1:19 left to play. Over the final 79 seconds of the game, Stonehill went 12-12 from the free throw line while keeping the Seahawks from making a field goal to secure the 68-60 win on the road.
