EASTON, Mass. (April 21, 2025) – The Stonehill College softball team played Providence College in a Patriots Day doubleheader at Fr. Gartland Field on Monday, falling in the first game, 11-1, before beating the Friars 12-4 in the second non-conference matchup.
GAME 1 – Final/5 Providence 11 (19-24, 11-10 Big East), Stonehill 1 (11-30, 3-12 NEC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Providence led off the game with an infield single, Elisa Smith hit a two-run homer over the center field fence to put the Friars up 2-0 in the first. PC added a third run in the opening frame on a ground out to short before adding four more in the second.
The Friars tallied their second homer of the afternoon, a three-run shot to left field to make the score 7-0 in the second.
Senior
Isabella Therrien (Auburn, Mass.) and junior
Jessica Brill (Natick, Mass.) hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom half of the second to put the Skyhawks on the board, 7-1.
An RBI single from Providence made the score 8-1 in the third, and after a scoreless fourth, the Friars tacked on three more runs in the fifth, with two coming in on a double to right center to put them ahead by 10, 11-1.
Stonehill was held without a run in the bottom of the fifth as Providence won the first of Monday's doubleheader, 11-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brill extended her hit streak to eight games with her third double of the season, while Therrien tallied her fifth double of the season.
- Sophomore Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) went 1-2 with a single as she has recorded a hit in seven of the last eight games.
- Sophomore Alexa Hospodar (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) had another solid outing in relief for the Skyhawks, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and three walks and just one earned run.
- Freshman Grace Conaway (St. Paul Park, Minn.) knocked a pair of singles for her ninth multi-hit game of the season.
GAME 2 – Final/6 Stonehill 12 (12-30, 3-12 NEC), Providence 4 (19-25, 11-10 Big East)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Therrien lined a single to left field to drive in freshman
Melanie Snyder (Howard Beach, N.Y.), who led off the inning with a hit by a pitch. Providence tied it in the top of the second when Julia Renny led off the inning with a solo home run to right field.
Sophomore
Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) broke the tie in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to deep center field as Snyder scored for the second time in the game. Therrien and Brill hit back-to-back doubles for the second game in a row, with Brill driving in two runs to make the score 4-1. Redshirt junior
May Dawes (Beacon Falls, Conn.) increased the Skyhawk lead to four runs with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to cap off a four-run third inning.
The Friars led off the fourth with a solo home run to center before making it a one-run game with two more runs coming in to score later in the inning. Brill tallied her second RBI double of the game in the bottom of the fifth, sparking a three-run inning for Stonehill. Senior
Chloe Kelly (East Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in Dawes with a double off the center field fence to cap off the inning, putting the Skyhawks ahead 8-4.
Senior
Emily Nardelli (North Attleboro, Mass.) reached base on an infield single and stole second base to start off the bottom of the sixth, eventually coming in to score on an infield error by the third baseman. Brill drove in her fourth run of the game to make the score 10-4 with an RBI single up the middle. In the next at-bat, Sullivan ended the game with a walk-off, two-run home run to left field as Stonehill won the game, 12-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Therrien scored twice and drove in one run on a double and a single to record her team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the season and sixth double on the year.
- Brill hit her fourth and fifth doubles of the season en route to her second three-hit game of the year while extending her hit streak to nine games. She also scored twice and drove in a career-best four RBI.
- Sullivan hit her first home run of the season while adding two RBI to her team-leading 23 on the season. She has a base hit in eight of the last nine games.
- Kelly's two doubles are her season-high for a single game, and she had 2+ hits for the third time this spring. Kelly's batting average improved to .296 as she's one of five Skyhawks hitting over .290 this season.
- Sophomore Alex Sciarretto (Bristol, Conn.) earned her second win of the season and pitched her third complete game, going six innings while allowing five hits and four runs (two earned) to go with two strikeouts.
- 12 runs are the most scored by a Skyhawk team in a game this season and the most since Stonehill defeated Clarion University, 13-11, on March 6, 2020.
