Softball Falls in Extras at UMass, 3-2

AMHERST, Mass. (April 30, 2025) – The Stonehill College softball team fell in a midweek, non-conference matchup against the University of Massachusetts at Sortino Field on Wednesday, 3-2, in an eight-inning pitchers' duel.

FINAL/8 UMass 3 (12-32, 4-15), Stonehill 2 (14-34, 5-13 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
UMass loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but Stonehill starter, freshman Amelia Styskal-Ward (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), held the Minutewomen scoreless with a ground out on the infield and a fly out to center.

UMass got on the board in the bottom of the second after a two-out triple sparked a string of hits for the Minutewomen as they tacked on two runs. Sophomore Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) limited the damage, entering the circle with the bases loaded before forcing a ground out to second base.

After three straight scoreless innings, Stonehill began to rally in the top of the sixth as sophomore Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) led off the inning with a single and got to third base after an error by the pitcher in the next at-bat. Sullivan helped herself in the circle, driving in Hofmann with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-1. Junior Jessica Brill (Natick, Mass.) would tie the score at 2-2 with an RBI double to center field later in the inning.

Despite the Minutewomen having runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, Sullivan continued to pitch around the threats on the basepath, sending the game to extra innings. The Skyhawks had a pair of hard-hit balls into the outfield in the eighth but went down scoreless.

UMass led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run over the right field fence, giving the Minutewomen a 3-2 victory.
