Baseball Falls to LIU in NEC Postseason Debut, 7-2

WAPPINGER FALLS, N.Y. (May 23, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped game one of the NEC Postseason Tournament, 7-2, to the top-seed Long Island University Friday afternoon at Heritage Financial Park in Wappinger Falls, New York. With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 20-31 overall, while the Sharks improved to 33-21 on the season.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Sam Parks paved the way for the Skyhawks at the dish, going 3-for-5 on the day with a double.
  • Junior Aidan Cohall and sophomore Aidan Sengenberger registered their respective 19th and sixth doubles of the season.
  • Sophomore's Ryan LeClair and Grayson Sparr extended their on-base streaks to 27 and 19 games, respectively.
  • Freshman Jack Welsch struck out three batters over 2.0 innings of relief for the Skyhawks, marking his third outing of the season with at least three strikeouts.
  • Senior Joseph Durso and junior Ryan Rivera fueled the Sharks offensive output, combing to going 6-for-8 with a double, a triple, and two runs driven in.
  • Senior Garrett Yawn secured his 10th win of the season in a complete-game effort where he allowed two runs and struck out 11 for LIU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a tightly contested opening inning featuring four combined strikeouts and no hits allowed by Stonehill junior Jimmy Gilleran or LIU's Yawn, it was the Sharks who struck first in the bottom of the second. After Rivera launched a triple over the outstretched glove of Sparr in left field, redshirt sophomore Noah Sorenson drove him in with an infield groundout to junior shortstop Sean McGee, giving LIU an early 1-0 lead.

LIU extended its advantage in the third inning with a three-run surge. A wild pitch allowed redshirt senior Jarod Wade to score, followed by an RBI ground-rule double from senior Jack Power. Sorenson then executed a sacrifice bunt to complete the scoring in the frame, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Both teams were held scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings before Stonehill broke through in the top of the sixth. Sengenberger roped a double into the right-centerfield gap, plating Sparr to trim the deficit to 4-1. However, LIU responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning, regaining a four-run cushion when graduate student Jacob Pipercic was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the seventh, Durso delivered a clutch two-run double with two outs, further widening the Sharks' lead to 7-2. Despite a late push in the ninth, where the Skyhawks put two runners aboard, Yawn closed the door on any comeback hopes, sealing LIU's 7-2 victory in game one of Stonehill's NEC Postseason debut.
