How it Happened
LIU opened the scoring just two and a half minutes into the game when junior
Erin Harkins fired a shot past Tremonte for her 29th goal of the season. Stonehill responded quickly with back-to-back goals from LaPia and Murphy to take the lead, but play was halted shortly after due to impending weather.
Following the brief delay, the Skyhawks extended their lead to 3–1 as first-year standouts
Meaghan Fealy and Beigel connected on a key offensive play with 9:06 remaining in the first quarter. LIU answered with two quick goals from Taylor and Lucia, evening the score at 3–3 heading into the second.
Junior
Alexa Nuzzi gave LIU a 4–3 edge early in the second quarter, but D'Agostino quickly responded for Stonehill, converting a feed from Coutu for her ninth goal of the season. The equalizer, scored just moments before another extended weather delay, set the stage for a turbulent remainder of the first half.
When play resumed at 9:01 PM, LaPia netted her second of the evening to regain the lead for Stonehill, 5–4. However, LIU closed out the half strong with goals from Trainor and senior
Pierson Schuchart, entering the break with a 6–5 advantage.
The Sharks added to their lead just over a minute into the third quarter with another goal from Lucia. Stonehill battled back with consecutive tallies from Beigel and D'Agostino, leveling the score at 7–7 with 9:55 remaining in the frame.
From there, LIU seized control, rattling off six unanswered goals to build a commanding 13–7 lead with just over four minutes remaining. Though Stonehill managed to cut into the deficit with goals from Murphy and Coutu, the comeback fell short. Junior
Selia Lyons sealed the win for the Sharks, scoring the final goal to secure a 14–9 victory and clinch LIU's second straight NEC Championship title.
