How it Happened
After a back-and-forth opening to the non-conference matchup, senior
Hannah Anselmo delivered a perfectly placed cross in the eighth minute to junior
Lily Newell, whose header struck the post—coming within inches of giving the Skyhawks an early lead.
In the 21st minute, junior
Emma Cranston unleashed a shot from 10 yards out, but Boston College's defense stepped in to deflect the attempt wide, keeping the match scoreless. Just seven minutes later, junior goalkeeper
Olivia Shippee made a remarkable point-blank save to deny junior
Kira Pomrinke her first collegiate goal.
The Eagles came out strong after halftime, but in the 48th minute, junior
Annie Renz connected with Newell, who chipped a shot toward goal. Shippee responded once again with a diving stop to preserve the 0-0 deadlock.
Boston College eventually broke through with four goals in an 11-minute span—from 52:18 to 63:12—off the boots of Mara, Lee, Lowenberg, and Dray to build a commanding 4-0 advantage.
Stonehill broke through with 10:24 remaining when Carey found Cassidy sprinting up the far side of the pitch, and she rocketed a shot past junior
Faith Fenwick to put the Skyhawks on the board.
Despite the late tally, the Eagles' lead proved too much to overcome, as Stonehill dropped its season opener, 4-1.
