Volleyball Eclipsed by Boston College in Second Match of the Night on Friday

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – In their second match of the day, the Stonehill volleyball program gave nearby rival Boston College a battle in the early evening. The Eagles were able to get the best of the Skyhawks, but once again the Skyhawks showed they were going to be force this season.
 
STONEHILL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Abby Farrell tallied three block assists for the second straight game and is 14 block assists shy of 100 in her career.
  • Freshman Kendra Sawyer once against paced the offense tallying 14 assists.
  • Fellow freshman Suzie Ponce was solid in the back row notching 14 digs. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was back-and-forth battle in the early part of the first set with the Skyhawks out in front of the Eagles, 11-9. Freshman Sam Loyd was nearly flawless in the first set tallying four kills on five attempts with an ace. However, a 6-0 Boston College run shifted momentum over to the Eagles and they never looked back, taking the first set, 25-16.
 
The second set mirrored he first se as the two teams remained close early. But Boston College created separation with a 6-2 run to take a 15-9 heading into the media time out. Stonehill chipped away at the deficit, pulling to within three of the Eagle lead with a kill from senior Mia Berardino, but they were unable to close the gap.
 
Stonehill never gave up. Trailing by six mid-way through the third set, junior Sammy Franco got the serve back for the Skyhawks leading to a service ace by Loyd to pull the Skyhawks to within four points. They continued to inch their way closer to the Eagles, pulling to within three, 17-14, on a kill by freshman Emaline Ealey, but that was as close they would get. Boston College maintained their lead and held on for the 25-19 win.

Stonehill returns to the court tomorrow afternoon to face NJIT at 1 p.m. on the campus of Iona College.
