MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (March 6, 2026) – The Stonehill College men's hockey team skated to a 4–4 tie against top-seeded Alaska Fairbanks before falling 1–0 in a shootout, sending the Skyhawks to the third-place bracket and ending their opportunity to compete for the championship at the inaugural United Collegiate Hockey Cup. With the result, Stonehill moved to 11–21–3 overall on the season, while Alaska Fairbanks improved to 14–15–3.
Highlights
How It Happened
Alaska Fairbanks wasted little time jumping out to an early lead, building a two-goal advantage just 3:20 into the contest. Misha Danylov opened the scoring 1:21 into the game before Peyton Platter doubled the Nanooks lead at the 3:20 mark of the first period.
Stonehill responded at 8:31 of the opening frame when Grainda capitalized on a loose puck in front following an initial shot from Lagerbäck, burying his 13th goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. After a back-and-forth remainder of the period, the Nanooks carried a 2–1 lead into the first intermission.
Alaska Fairbanks quickly restored its two-goal cushion early in the second period, as Alexander Malinowski netted his 10th goal of the season just 2:41 into the frame. Less than four minutes later, the Skyhawks answered when Hunter redirected a pass from Chambers in the slot to Posma, who fired home his second goal of the year. The tally extended Posma's point streak to seven games and pulled Stonehill back within one.
The Skyhawks evened the score at 3–3 just 44 seconds into the third period. While on the power play, Galante fed Murphy from below the goal line, and Murphy snapped a shot past Lassi Lehti for his seventh goal of the season and fourth on the power play. At the 11:28 mark of the final period, Lehtinen gave Stonehill its first lead of the semifinal, ripping a shot from the near-side faceoff circle off a feed from Lagerbäck to make it 4–3.
However, in the final second of regulation, Alaska Fairbanks found the equalizer during a scramble in front of the net with the extra attacker on the ice, tying the game at four and forcing overtime.
In the extra session, the Nanooks outshot the Skyhawks 3–1. Despite being down a skater for the final 1:27 of overtime, Androlewicz and the Stonehill penalty kill held firm to keep the game tied and send it to a shootout.
After a scoreless first three rounds of the shootout—highlighted by shots from Romer and Chambers that rang off the crossbar—Tommy Cronin sealed the victory in the bottom of the fourth round, lifting a backhand shot past Androlewicz to give Alaska Fairbanks the 1–0 shootout win.
