PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore outside hitter
Sam Loyd eclipsed her career single-game high, tallying 21 kills to guide the Stonehill volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Manhattan to conclude the Friar Classic on Saturday afternoon.
STONEHILL HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Sam Loyd recorded a new career single-game high 21 kills to lead the Skyhawks to victory over Manhattan.
- Sophomore Haley Herndon posted a .409 attack percentage with 11 kills, while coming one dig shy of her first double-double of the season, tallying nine against Manhattan.
- Sophomore Kendra Sawyer registered her fourth double-double of the season as she paced the offense with 45 assists and notched 10 digs against Manhattan.
- Junior Kristi Bishop anchored the defense with 19 digs.
STONEHILL 3, MANHATTAN 1
The Skyhawks came out of the gate strong establishing an aggressive attack of 17 kills to take a 1-0 match advantage, edging out the Jaspers, 25-23, in the first set.
Manhattan managed to even up the match with a 25-22 win in the second set, but momentum remained with the Skyhawks. While solidifying their defense behind junior
Kristi Bishops 12 digs, Stonehill won the third set, 25-19.
Stonehill slammed the door on Manhattan in the fourth set. Hitting a staggering .467 as a team, the Skyhawks sealed the match with a 25-20 victory behind sophomore
Sam Loyd's career single-game high 21 kills.
PROVIDENCE 3, STONEHILL 0
In their first match of the day, Stonehill fell to host Providence College in three sets, but they were not going away quietly. Despite trailing 2-0, Stonehill responded jumping out to an early 12-4 lead in the third set. The Friars countered with a 10-1 run to re-claim the lead, 14-13, and was able to hold off the Skyhawks down the stretch to claim the match.
