Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – In a midweek, non-conference bout against Holy Cross, the Stonehill men's soccer team battled back to erase a first half deficit with a pair of goals, but was stifled due to a late Crusaders goal.
STONEHILL HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Nate Monteiro recorded both the Skyhawks goals for his second and third goals of the season.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Felix van der Hagen registered seven saves.
- The Skyhawks had the edge on corner kicks, 3-1, in the second half.
- Stonehill outshot Holy Cross in shots-on-goal, 5-3, in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore goalkeeper Felix van der.Hagen came up with three huge saves in the opening minutes of the contest as Holy Cross started strong offensively. The Crusaders were quick to jump on the board first in the 13
th minute. They added an insurance goal in the 18
th minute to take a two-goal advantage into the break.
The Skyhawks were not backing down and turned up the energy in the latter portion of the second half. After freshman
Bryan Mayhew drew a foul in the 68
th minute to earn a penalty kick for the Skyhawks, junior
Nate Monteiro buried the penalty kick in the back of the net to cut the deficit in half.
Momentum appeared to have shifted over to the Skyhawks. With just under three minutes to play in the match, Monteiro scored the equalizer from atop the 18-yard-box. However, it did not stay tied for long as the Crusaders answered a minute later with the game-winner.
