Patrick Leahy isin his third year as head coach of the ice hockey program atStonehill College. He was named the tenth head coach in programhistory in May 2011 by Brendan Sullivan, Director ofIntercollegiate Athletics at the College.
Leahy has quickly revitalized theprogram, raising Stonehill’s win total each season at thehelm and also qualifying for the Northeast-10 Tournament bothyears. He has posted a 21-27-3 (.441) overall record over his twoseasons, including a 12-8-2 (.591) clip in NE-10 play, reaching theNE-10 Tournament Championship match his first season.
Leahy has coached six All-Northeast-10 Conference selections andproduced six NE-10 All-Rookie Team picks over his two seasons,including 2011-13 NE-10 Rookie of the Year Chris Tasiopoulos.Leahy’s teams have also produced in the classroom, with threeNE-10 Academic All-Conference honorees, including recent graduateDana Borges, who is a two-time NE-10 Scholar-Athlete SportExcellence honoree and Capital One Academic All-American who wasnamed the inaugural NE-10 Man of the Year. Borges, a semifinalistfor the Joe Concannon, presented annually to the top American-borncollegiate hockey player in New England playing at the Division IIor III level, has also collected a pair of Academic All-Districtselections and signed a professional contract with Evry PeauxRouges of France’s second division.
Leahy piloted the Stonehill to theNortheast-10 Championship game in his first season, far exceedingthe Skyhawks placement in the Conference's preseason poll of fifthplace, tying Southern New Hampshire for the last spot in the NE-10.The squad finished second overall in the conference in scoringoffense (3.12 g/gm), scoring defense (3/28 g/gm), penalty killpercentage (80.9%) and combined special teams play (50.6%). Fourplayers earned All-Conference honors, the most since the 2007-08season for the Skyhawks, while freshman goaltender ChrisTasiopoulos was named the NE-10 Rookie of the Year.
Stonehill again reached thepostseason in Leahy’s second season, matching its NE-10 wintotal (6) from the previous season and posting one more overall win(11). The Skyhawks finished second in the NE-10 for scoring (3.81gpg), including a Conference-best power play (23.2%), while rankingsecond for combined special teams (51.4%). Leahy’s eye fortalent continued to show with four freshman collecting NE-10All-Rookie Team status, while senior captain Dana Borges was namedthe inaugural NE-10 Man of the Year after becoming theprogram’s first Academic All-American.
Leahy has overseen theprogram’s involvement with Team IMPACT, drafting Jake Quinnfrom Berkley during his first year, which aims at improving thequality of life for kids facing life-threatening illnesses bycreating unparalleled team based support systems.
Leahy joined Stonehill followingone season as the varsity hockey coach at King Philip Regional HighSchool in nearby Wrentham. Prior to that, he served four seasons ashead coach of the hockey program at The Winchendon (Mass.)School.
Leahy led The Winchendon School toback-to-back 20-win seasons in his final two years as head coach,posting 23 wins in 2007-08 and 22 victories in 2008-09 in which theteam won the Saint Sebastian’s Holiday Tournament. Heformulated a recruiting strategy that would result in attractingprep school student-athletes that would go on to play at everylevel of collegiate hockey, including nearly every program in theNE-10 Conference. In addition to his duties with the hockey programin Winchendon, Leahy was weightlifting coach for the athleticdepartment, baseball head coach and junior varsity soccer coach,while also teaching English and world history and serving as anadmissions associate.
Leahy has also worked in hockey asa regional scout for Gilmour Academy (2009-10), New England scoutfor Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League(2009), coach and evaluator for Hockey Night in Boston (2008), onice coach at the USA Hockey Massachusetts Festival (2008) as wellas USA Hockey Select-17 player development assistant coach (2008).He is Level 3 certified with USA Hockey and in the process ofgetting his Level 4 certification.
Leahy is a 2001 graduate ofMassachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where he earned a Bachelorof Arts degree in sociology and was a member of the ice hockeyprogram, serving as captain for three seasons. He earnedAll-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC)honors his junior year. Leahy went on to play parts of two seasonsof professional hockey with the Mohawk Valley Prowlers of theUnited Hockey League (UHL) and Indianapolis Ice of the CentralHockey League (CHL).
