Thomas Leads Stonehill at George Davis Invitational

Brookline, Mass., All-American posts second straight outdoor dual win performance as Skyhawks rack up nine top five finishes

LOWELL, Mass. (April 10, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's track and field team posted nine top five finishes at the George Davis Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, at Cushing Field Complex on Saturday.

Sophomore All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) was a double-winner for the second-straight week to start his outdoor season after winning the high jump and hurdles events at five indoor events this winter. Thomas, the reigning Division II Indoor National Champion for the high jump, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second-straight year as he took first place on Saturday with a height of 6-feet, 10.75-inches. He also won the 110-meter hurdles at this event for the second-straight year, finishing in 14.99-seconds. Freshman Xavier Harris-Dixon (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) was second in 15.63-seconds.

Senior All-American Nathan Morse (Whitinsville, Mass./Holy Name) finished second (out of 53 runners) in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.38 – just 0.24 seconds behind Providence College sophomore Alex Wallace for first place.

Senior All-American Patrick Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) took second (out of 53) in the two-mile run, establishing a school record with his time of 9:04.61 – just 3.07 seconds behind event winner Glarius Rop of American International College. Classmate Zachary Lankow (Saugus, Mass./St. John's Prep) was ninth in 9:20.79, while junior Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) took 13th in 9:28.50 to lead the seven Skyhawk runners in the event.

Sophomore All-American Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) placed third (out of 62 competitors) in the 1500-meter run with his time of 3:58.05, leading a group of eight Skyhawks that ran the event, three in the top ten. Freshman Justin Blaszczyk (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) was ninth in 4:03.42, while sophomore Samuel Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) was tenth in 4:03.68.

Sophomores Kevin McCann (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade) finished second and third, respectively, in the pole vault. McCann cleared 13-feet, 11.25-inches, while Byrnes topped 12-feet, 11.50-inches.

Sophomore Jonathan Gelcius (Greenwich, Mass./Greenwich) placed third (out of 17 throwers) in the javelin with a distance of 182-feet, even. Freshman Taylor Viotto (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) was sixth at 159-10.

Sophomore Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) placed fifth (out of 15 competitors) in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:59.08. Freshman Nathaniel Webber (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic) was seventh in 10:13.91.

Stonehill was sixth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 45.13-seconds. Running for the Skyhawks were junior John Driscoll (Revere, Mass./Revere), sophomores Michael Miela (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Trabuco Hills) and Colin Prior (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) and freshman Michael Harris (Danvers, Mass./Danvers).

Driscoll was also ninth (out of 12) in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 58.28-seconds.


Senior All-American Nathan Morse was just edged out in the 800-meter run, placing second. 
Other Stonehill performances of note:

Senior Patrick Fanning (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) was eighth (out of 34 throwers) in the shot put with a distance of 43-feet, 10.00-inches. Classmate Daniel Newton (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) finished ninth with a throw of 43-feet, 2.25-inches. Fanning was also ninth (out of 27) in the hammer throw with a distance of 143-feet, 11-inches.

 

Senior Mark White (Milton, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) placed eighth (out of 32) in the discus throw with a distance of 127-feet, 4-inches. Newton was 13th at 118-06, while Fanning was 15th at 116-00.

 

Freshman Alex Willgoos (Newington, Conn./Newington) was 18th (out of 33 competitors) in the long jump with a distance of 19-feet, 6.75-inches. He was also 14th in the triple jump with a distance of 39-feet, 2.50-inches.

 

Freshman Thomas Banks (Peabody, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) placed 19th (out of 44 runners) in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.23-seconds. Junior Pak Lul (Portland, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) was 25th in 52.70-seconds.

 

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday when it competes at the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Invitational in Amherst, Mass., starting at 11:30 a.m.
