Zawalich Leads Stonehill at Sorlien Invitational


Senior All-American Daniel Zawalich provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in March in the 3000-meter run.

Senior All-American provisionally qualifies for NCAA Championships in 3000m 

KINGSTON, R.I. (January 24, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's track and field team competed at the Sorlien Invitational, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, at Mackal Fieldhouse today.

Senior All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Massachusetts/St. John's of Shrewsbury) finished fifth in the 3000-meter run with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8:26.54, which when converted for the flat track gives him the seventh-fastest time in Division II to date at 8:20.72. Sophomore Tyler Henseler (Coventry, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) placed 15th in the field of 28 runners in 9:03.10.

Junior All-American Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Indiana/Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.70, while freshman Jason Dimmick (Sutton, Massachusetts/Sutton) took eighth in the field of 24 in 1:58.80.

Senior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Arizona/Shadow Mountain) finished eighth in the 60-meter dash final in 7.32-seconds after qualifying eighth among 31 entries with a preliminary time of 7.15-seconds. Freshman Patrick Ahern (Charlotte, North Carolina/Providence Day School) placed 19th in the prelims with a time of 7.49-seconds and also finished 16th (out of 29 entries) in the 200-meter dash in 23.81-seconds.

Grubel also competed in the 400-meter dash and finished eighth in 51.30-seconds, just behind sophomore All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) who placed seventh in 51.17 as the duo were the top non-Division I competitors in the field of 22.

Grubel and Baldasare also ran legs for Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay which finished sixth in 3:23.20. Freshmen Ruddy Severino (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen) and Brendan Polichronopoulos (Penacook, New Hampshire/Merrimack Valley) also ran legs for the relay team.

Junior Mason Griffin (Wellesley, Massachusetts/Wellesley) placed ninth out of 31 throwers in the shot put with a distance of 47-feet, 7.25-inches. Senior Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen) placed 19th with a throw of 42-09.50, while sophomore Carmen Cilfone (Falmouth, Massachusetts/Falmouth) was 20th at 42-04.75.


Junior All-American Nick Kirkpatrick finished third in the 800-meter run.

Cormier was also 12th in the weight throw with a distance of 48-feet, 0.50-inches, while freshman Stefan Balestra (Lincoln, Rhode Island/Lincoln) was 13th at 47-10.00 in the field of 30 competitors. Junior Morgan Johnson (West Newbury, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) took 16th at 46-04.00. 

More Stonehill performances: 

Freshman Jon Naval (Stratford, Connecticut/Bunnell) placed seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 44-feet, 4.75-inches. He also finished 18th in the long jump with a leap of 19-09.00. 

Freshman Dillon McGee (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) led six Stonehill runners in the field of 20 competitors in the one mile run with a time of 4:24.60 for eighth place. Senior Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Connecticut/Southington) finished 12th in 4:31.10. 

Freshman Dillon Neumann (Harwinton, Connecticut/Lewis Mills) placed tenth in the pole vault with a height of 13-feet, 3.50-inches. 

Senior All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Massachusetts/BC High) and freshman Mark Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) placed 12th and 14th respectively in the high jump. Staley cleared 6-feet, 2.25-inches, while Hamalian had a leap of 6-00.50. Hamalian also finished eighth in the long jump with a distance of 21-feet, 6-inches. 

Sophomore Duncan Burleigh (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) placed 15th in the 1000-meter run in 2:37.46, while freshman James Murphy (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) took 18th in 2:38.32. 

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday when it competes at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, at 9 a.m.
