BOSTON, Mass. (October 12, 2024) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell to the nationally ranked #18 Northeastern Huskies, 5-1, Saturday night inside Matthews Arena. With the loss, the Skyhawks dropped to 1-2 overall, while the Huskies improved to 1-0 to start their campaign.
Highlights
- Junior defender Evan Orr scored the lone goal for the Skyhawks off senior classmates Kyle Heath and Jake Cady's first assists of the season.
- Orr's lamp-lighter also marked the first of his career as a Skyhawk.
- Graduate goaltender Connor Androlewicz tallied 30 saves in between the pipes for Stonehill.
- Junior captain Jack Williams paved the way offensively for Northeastern, registering three points on the night off a pair of goals and an assist.
- Senior Christophe Tellier and junior Vinny Borgesi each also recorded a goal and a helper for the Huskies.
- Sophomore netminder Cameron Whitehead picked up his 18th career win in goal for Northeastern after stopping 17 of the 18 shots he faced.
How It Happened
After a back-and-forth start to the contest, Stonehill would light the lamp first at the 12:56 mark. Cady sent a pass from below the goal line to the dot for Heath, who then slid a puck over to Orr on the blue line. Lining up for a one-time shot, Orr rifled one right past Whitehead into the back of the cage for his first career goal as a Skyhawk.
However, less than 30 seconds later, Northeastern would find the equalizer. 13:20 into the period, Tellier received a pass from Williams and graduate defender
Jake Boltmann for his first goal of the season.
In the final minute of the first period, Androlewicz would come up clutch with a stellar glove save to keep the game knotted at one heading into the first intermission.
Northeastern wasted little time in the second period grabbing its first lead of the game. At the 2:29 mark, Borgesi lit the lamp on his first goal of the season, assisted by junior
Nick Rheaume and freshman
Jack Henry.
With 8:08 left in the second, sophomore
Brady Hunter found freshman
Leo Chambers out in front of the net for a redirect opportunity. Despite the point-blank chance from Chambers, Whitehead would be in the perfect position to deny the Skyhawks a scoring opportunity to keep the game at 2-1 in favor of the Huskies, heading into the third.
Northeastern came out strong in the third period, netting three goals over two minutes in the early portion of the final frame of regulation. Senior Ryan
McGuire netted his first career goal in a Northeastern uniform, while Williams netted a pair in the third.
The Northeastern lead eventually proved too much for Stonehill to overcome in the third period, as the Skyhawks eventually fell to the Huskies by a final score of 5-1.
