Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to LIU

EASTON, Mass. (October 19, 2024) – The Stonehill College Volleyball team dropped its second match in two days to LIU at Merkert Gym, falling 3-1 in a Northeast Conference contest.

Highlights
  • Senior captain Emma Graves (Vestal, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 12.5 points on 12 kills and a block assist.
  • Freshman Paloma Gonzalez Jaramillo (Wylie, Texas) also notched 12 kills on a .250 hit percentage.
  • Junior Mia Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) recorded 10 kills to go with three digs, two assists, and an ace.
  • Sophomore Maddie Schamaun (Rockville, Md.) led Stonehill with 21 assists and had 14 digs while sophomore Amaya Parnell (Portland, Ore.) had 18 assists and 10 digs in the loss. Schamaun led the Skyhawks with five service aces as well.
  • Sophomore libero Sarah Frager (Mooresville, N.C.) also had 14 digs to go with three assists.
SET 1 | Stonehill scored the first four points of the match as the Skyhawks led the entire way in the opening set, winning 25-22. Gonzalez Jaramillo led Stonehill with four kills in the set with the Skyhawks getting help from the Sharks seven attack errors.
 
SET 2 | The Skyhawks took an early 4-1 lead in the second set after back-to-back kills from Graves, but LIU responded, tying the match at 5-5 before taking a 7-6 lead. The Sharks then went on a 4-1 run, extending their advantage to four points, 11-7. LIU would lead for the majority of the second set until a late rally from the Skyhawks tied the score at 20-20, 22-22, and 23-23. The Sharks halted the Stonehill rally, scoring the final two points of the set to tie the match, 25-23.
 
SET 3 | Stonehill took an early 3-2 lead but fell behind, 8-7, after four kills from the Sharks. The third set then belonged to LIU as the Sharks finished the third set on a 17-2 run, winning 25-9.
 
SET 4 | The fourth set was neck-and-neck the whole way, with the two teams finding themselves tied nine times. However, there were just three lead changes, and after Stonehill gave up a 13-11 lead, LIU finished the set on a 14-8 run to win 25-21. Sophomore Georgia Murphy (Plano, Texas) had four kills in the set while Berardino had five to keep the Skyhawks in it but it wasn't enough as the Sharks won the match, 3-1.

Stonehill Volleyball travels to Chicago State next weekend for a pair of Northeast Conference matchups, the first being on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. and the second being at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26.
