Women's Hockey Falls to #12 Penn State in Ice Breaker Tournament Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio. (October 26, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's hockey team fell to nationally ranked #12 Penn State University, 11-1, in the consolation game of the 2024 Women's Ice Breaker Tournament at the Schottenstein Center Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks dropped to 1-8 overall, while the Nittany Lions improved to 7-3 on the year.

Highlights
  • Graduate transfer Maeve Connolly tallied a team-high 11 faceoff wins on the day for the Skyhawks.
  • Junior co-captain Sydney Russell and first-year defender Reagan Whynot paved the way on the defensive end of the ice, recording five and four blocks, respectively.
  • Junior Mia Kenmore lit the lamp on her first goal of the season off assists from classmates Brianna Walkom and Russell.
  • First-year netminder Alexsa Caron registered an outstanding 54 saves in between the pipes, marking her second game in a row making at least 50 saves.
  • First-year student Grace Outwater paved the way for Penn State with five points on the day off three goals and two assists.
  • Senior Brianna Brooks also registered a two-goal game for the Nittany Lions.
  • Also finding the back of the net for Penn State was the first-year trio Abby Stonehouse, Nicole Hall and McKenna Walsh, as well as sophomore classmates Stella Retrum and Karolina Hengelmüller , and junior Maddy Christian.
  • Junior Lauren Barbro and graduate student Annie Spring split time in net and stopped 14 of the 15 shots they faced inside the crease.
 
How it Happened
Penn State opened the non-conference contest on the attack, registering 17 shot attempts in 10 minutes of play. However, the Nittany Lions would open the scoring midway through the first when Outwater lit the lamp on her first goal of three on the day.
 
With 6:01 left in the first period, the Nittany Lions would increase their lead when Outwater scored her second goal of the period off a rebounded shot in close by graduate student Alyssa Machado.
 
After the first period, the Skyhawks would be awarded a penalty shot after drawing a slashing penalty in the final second of the opening 20 minutes of play. However, Barbro would stifle junior Bailey Feeney's bid for the back of the net, keeping Stonehill off the board in the first.
 
Penn State came out of the gates strong in the second period, scoring two quick goals at the 4:25 and 5:13 marks of the frame off the sticks of Hengelmüller and Christian, respectively.
 
Stonehill would cut into its deficit at the 7:46 mark of the middle period when Kenmore rifled a shot over Barbro's glove in the net for her first goal while shorthanded.
 
However, Penn State would regain its early momentum, scoring two goals in the final three minutes of the second off the sticks of Retrum and Brooks. The game entered the second intermission with the Nittany Lions leading 6-1.
 
Penn State carried its momentum into the third period, tacking five additional goals on the board in the final 20 minutes of regulation to seal the 11-1 victory over the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (1-8, 1-3 NEWHA) returns to action next weekend for a two-game series against NEWHA opponent St. Michael's College. Puck drop of Friday's series opener between the Skyhawks and Purple Knights from Burlington, Vermont is set for 7 PM.
