Volleyball Wins Road Finale at CCSU in Straight Sets

Skyhawks use 15 aces and an attack percentage of .205 to sweep Central Connecticut in final road match of 2024

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (November 9, 2024) – The Stonehill College volleyball team defeated Central Connecticut State University in a Northeast Conference contest, 3-0, at Detrick Gymnasium Saturday afternoon in the Skyhawks road finale.

Highlights
  • Sophomore Georgia Murphy (Plano, Texas) paced Stonehill with nine kills and 10.5 points, also notching seven digs, one service ace, and one block assist.
  • One day after recording a career-best .563 hit percentage, senior Leah Michalowski (Holden, Mass.) followed her performance up with six more kills on a .556 hit percentage.
  • Sophomore Abby Farrell (Reading, Mass.) had 9.5 points, tying a team-high mark of five service aces while leading the team with three block assists. Farrell also recorded five digs on the defensive end.
  • Junior Mia Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) matched Farrell with five aces of her own to record nine points with four kills and seven digs.
  • Sophomores Maddie Schamaun (Rockville, Md.) and Amaya Parnell (Portland, Ore.) split the setting duties for the Skyhawks as Schamaun had 14 assists and Parnell had 13.
  • Stonehill recorded 32 kills on 83 attack attempts (.205) while tallying 15 service aces. The Skyhawks only had six service errors in the game, their second-lowest mark of the season while their 15 aces are tied for the second most in a match this year.
SET 1 | Two kills from Murphy sparked a 4-0 start for the Skyhawks as they would lead for the entire first set. Murphy led the way with four of Stonehill's nine kills in the opening frame of action while the Skyhawks also tallied five aces en route to a 25-18 set win.
 
SET 2 | The Blue Devils took an early 3-2 lead, but Stonehill scored the next five points, taking a 7-3 advantage. Stonehill led the rest of the way as the Skyhawks had their best-attacking set of the match, recording 14 kills on a .385 hit percentage as a team. Murphy and senior Emma Graves (Vestal, N.Y.) both had three kills to lead the Skyhawks to a 25-15 win in the second set.
 
SET 3 | Stonehill started the third set on fire, building a 9-0 lead out the gate, with Berardino supplying three service aces during the run. The Blue Devils responded, going on a 6-0 run of their own to trim their deficit to just three points, 9-6. However, the Skyhawks didn't let up growing their lead back up to 10 points, 20-10 with four different Skyhawks recording kills during the stretch. Murphy capped off the match with a kill on the final point as Stonehill won the set 25-17, sweeping the match, 3-0.

Stonehill wraps up its 2024 season next weekend, taking on FDU at Merkert Gymnasium in a pair of NEC matchups, the first at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 followed by Senior Day at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.
